Almost 100 volunteers, more than 270 members in total and a potential 300 missions per year: The Gilching Volunteer Fire Department is on a growth path.

However, since the annual general meeting on Friday, the club has had the opportunity to remove members from the list if they no longer take part in club life.

Gilching – This development is impressive.

When Gilching's fire brigade board member Johann Müller and commander Robert Strobl presented their annual reports at the annual general and service meeting last Friday at the Oberer Wirt, the curves were clearly pointing upwards.

Müller reported 276 members (22 more than in the previous year, including 38 young people), Strobl reported 94 active members (nine more than in the previous year, as of December 31, 2023).

And when Mayor Manfred Walter presented the schedule for the construction of the new fire station to the more than 100 people present late in the evening, that also lifted the mood.

The final preparatory work for the 18 million euro project should be completed this year, especially the detailed planning and the tender.

“The groundbreaking ceremony will take place in spring 2025,” said Walter, emphasizing: “Good things will finally be finished.

We will get an excellent fire station.” He is looking forward to the project – as well as the construction of 18 apartments on the former Zelenka site on Frühlingstrasse.

The mayor explained that firefighters also have the opportunity to rent an apartment there.

Good development for Gilching's fire department

In his report, Commander Strobl spoke of a “good development”.

This is also necessary with a view to the future.

Because in his opinion it won't stay at the 220 missions like last year.

“We have to prepare ourselves for significant growth.

In eight or ten years at the latest we will have 300 missions a year,” he predicted.

This is a value that the Germering and Unterpfaffenhofen fire departments, which are responsible for similarly large areas of operation, already achieve.

Last year, the people of Gilching had to go on 125 technical assistance missions, 70 classic fire brigade missions, including many false alarms caused by automatic fire alarm systems, and 25 other missions.

13 people and one animal could have been freed and saved by the fire department, said Strobl.

“Unfortunately, we were no longer able to help three times.” The range of operations covered the entire spectrum – from clearing fallen trees to a reed fire on Steinberg to helping with accidents, including around eight times on the A 96 alone in the area of the Gilching junction.

“The well-known spot,” said Strobl about the area towards Munich shortly after the speed limit was lifted.

“A rogue who suspects a construction error behind it.”

Members should be retained

The commander paid high praise to his comrades.

It was “a damn good team” that he and his deputy Michael Klinglmair were able to work with, he said.

Thanks were also given to Mayor Walter, the responsible employee in the town hall, the depot, the comrades from the Geisenbrunn fire department and the district fire inspection.

The good atmosphere should continue.

Board member Johann Müller explained that an important goal is to continue to attract new members in the future.

“We have to work on maintaining our membership,” he said – simply because there are always departures for professional or training reasons or because of moving away.

“It makes sense to expand the active fire service even further.” Events like the Long Night of the Fire Department with more than 1,000 visitors are important for presenting oneself – internal events like the barbecue are of great importance for solidarity.

But Müller doesn't want to increase the number of members at any cost.

The meeting unanimously decided to change the statutes, according to which members can be removed from the list in the future if they do not hear from them for a longer period of time.

In the only election of the evening, Christopher Wegener (25) was chosen as the new deputy chairman.

Predecessor Daniel Rothfuß had resigned from his position for personal reasons.
