After the arrival of Javier Milei to Israel, the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas stated this Tuesday that it "
strongly condemns
" Argentina's plans to move its embassy
from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
.
"A violation of the rights of our Palestinian people to their land, and
a violation of the norms of international law,
considering Jerusalem as occupied Palestinian land," was how the Islamist group described the measure that Milei anticipated from Israel.
The Palestinian group is at war with Israel in Gaza, following the October attack on a kibbutz in the south of the country.
According to diplomatic sources, Argentina would become
one of the few countries
that has its main diplomatic mission in the city of Jerusalem.
Hamas's anger arose after the Argentine President arrived in Israel this Tuesday and announced the transfer of the diplomatic headquarters.
Furthermore, the libertarian has already prepared a decree to include Hamas within the list of groups recognized as terrorists.
The president is working on the matter together with the Ministers of Security, Patricia Bullrich, and Justice, Mariano Cúneo Libarona.
The Defense portfolio, headed by Luis Petri, also intervenes.
The United States moved its embassy during 2018
One of the few countries that changed its embassy in Israel was the United States.
It did so in 2018, under the presidency of Donald Trump, after recognizing said city as the capital of Israel.
The United Nations conceived in 1947 a special international status for Jerusalem given its importance to Jews, Christians and Muslims.
But the city was divided after the war that followed Israel's declaration of independence in 1948.
Israel seized East Jerusalem from Jordan during the Six-Day War in June 1967 and subsequently annexed it, considering the entire city its indivisible capital.
Jerusalem has been under Israeli authority since then, although the Palestinians claim the eastern part as the capital of their future state.
