Denmark has been planning to increase its military budget for some time.
But the plans do not go far enough for the Danish Defense Minister.
Copenhagen - Almost two years after the start of the war in Ukraine, the secret services and authorities of several countries in northern Europe are warning that further confrontations with Russia could be imminent.
The Danish secret service is now saying that Russian military actions as a provocation of NATO states are “very likely”.
This was reported by the Austrian news portal
OE24
.
This does not mean that the Baltic and Scandinavian states fear a war with Russia.
Rather, Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen warned last week in the Danish Parliament against military operations that were intended to deliberately challenge NATO countries and exert pressure.
It is conceivable, for example, that Russia could deliberately violate national borders with military aircraft or warships or gather armed forces at a NATO border in order to demonstrate its power, the report says.

Against this background, Poulsen called on the Danish parliament to increase the military budget as soon as possible, as the Danish portal
The Local
reported.
Although it was only last year that there was an agreement to additionally finance the Danish military budget with 150 billion crowns (approx. 20.1 billion euros), the implementation of the project could take several years, according to Poulsen.
However, in order to decisively counteract possible Russian provocations, faster action is required.
“If you travel and talk to colleagues, for example in Poland, there is no doubt that Russia may have plans to attack NATO countries in the next few years,”
The Local
quoted Poulsen as saying in parliament.
Increasing the military budget: Parliament in Denmark wants to talk about possible measures
The minister sees Poulsen's demand to invest in Denmark's military beyond the budget increase that has already been decided on as "not excluded" and emphasized that he also perceives the "political will" for such a decision in parliament.
According to Danish media, a more in-depth discussion on the issue is expected in Parliament in Copenhagen at the end of the month.

Among the countries in northern and northeastern Europe, Denmark is not alone in warning of possible dangers from Russia.
Norway and Sweden have also warned of realistic dangers in recent months, and Finland has also strengthened its 1,340-kilometer-long border with Russia.
