The Ebersberg district is expected to grow by 11 percent in the next few years.

District Administrator Robert Niedergesäß (CSU) isn't worried about that.

Munich – From 147,000 to 163,000.

The population in the Ebersberg district will increase by 11 percent in 20 years.

Together with the Pfaffenhofen district, it is the highest growth in all of Upper Bavaria.

In an interview, District Administrator Robert Niedergesäß (CSU) explains how the district is dealing with this.

Mr. Niedergesäß, the Ebersberg district already has an above-average population density.

The population will continue to rise until 2042.

How did you react to the forecast?

That wasn't a big surprise for us.

We have been carrying out our own population growth forecasts for years.

Our estimate is 12 percent.

We have grown significantly in the last few years.

I'm now in my eleventh year as district administrator. When I started, we had 131,000 residents.

Now there are already 147,000.

Where does this rapid growth come from?

The pressure to grow is incredibly high throughout the greater Munich area.

We have a large influx, especially of young families.

And life expectancy also continues to increase.

All of this ensures that we are becoming more and more residents.

Ebersberg District Administrator Niedergesäß is not worried about population growth

How are you preparing for the increasing population?

We have been dealing with demographic change for ten years and have had an overall demographic concept since 2013.

There is a team in the specialist departments that covers a lot of things and looks after different areas such as families, youth or seniors.

Overall, we are already doing relatively well.

So far there have been no complaints from parents because they have not been able to get a daycare place.

What specific adjustment screws does the district use?

The municipalities invest a lot in crèche and kindergarten places.

Schools have a high priority in the district office.

We are planning a fifth high school in Poing.

We are investing a total of 50 million euros in school expansions and renovations.

We are identifying large-scale new building areas.

Through densification we create additional living space, which is a big issue.

Mobility is also important.

We have greatly expanded public transport, but that also costs a lot of money.

Isn't it also risky for society if the district has more and more inhabitants?

Of course, things will get tighter in the next few years.

The district is not growing in area.

And of course it is a problem when the access roads become more and more crowded or when locals can no longer find affordable housing.

Population growth leads to different reactions.

There have also been citizens' initiatives that have spoken out against growth.

Some communities decided on strong growth years ago, but other communities are only growing moderately.

“We have a good overall package”: Ebersberg district sees itself prepared for population growth

What makes the region so attractive?

We have a good overall package.

The Ebersberg district is an economically strong and strategically located location.

Purchasing power is high, we have a lot of prosperity and unemployment is low.

The family-friendliness of our communities makes the district particularly attractive for young families.

Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann says: Bavaria is dependent on migration.

How do you deal with the issue of immigration?

We need an orderly immigration.

The proportion of foreign citizens has also doubled.

We need these people in all areas.

But unbridled migration must stop.

This is highly social and socially explosive.
