A traffic light has been regulating the critical traffic junction in the center of Wartenberg for almost two months now.

Time for an interim assessment - and small ideas for improvement.

Wartenberg – The term “traffic light” is an irritating word for quite a few citizens these days.

At this point we don't want to look at Berlin, but at Wartenberg - and at an actual traffic light system.

The fact that one would be installed at the traffic junction at the intersection of Strogenstrasse/Thenner Strasse/Markplatz – the idea caused some critics to be on red alert in advance, just as the current federal government is.

Since mid-December, road traffic has been controlled via this traffic light, and a few new turning lanes have been added.

After the starting phase, Mayor Christian Pröbst currently sees anything but red. Rather, he draws a green, i.e. satisfied, interim conclusion - even though the intelligent circuit is not yet running.

“On the whole, it’s really good,” says Pröbst in an interview with our newspaper.

He has not registered “any complaints” so far, only “two or three suggestions”.

Intelligent switching is coming in April

“The circuit needs to be optimized,” says local fashion entrepreneur Wolfgang Billmayer.

And a lot will happen in this regard.

As Pröbst reports, the control of the traffic lights is currently fixed (timewise).

The top five centimeters of asphalt layer, which would be applied in April, was still missing for the intelligent circuit.

Only then can the coil for floor loops be milled in, according to Pröbst.

These regulate the circuit in a north-south direction.

In the east and west directions, however, cameras will classify traffic events.

The final work on the sidewalk will be completed in April, after which the 800-meter-long renovation of Strogenstrasse, which was carried out over the past year, will be completely completed.

Pröbst currently sees the problem that “if you come from the direction of Thenner See, you have little right to drive”.

And you currently only have one green turning arrow when you come from the parish kindergarten from the south.

If you come from the north, many people turning left on green don't know that they can actually drive because the oncoming traffic is still red.

This means that traffic flows more slowly due to this hesitation; a green traffic light arrow would also be helpful at this point.

Green arrow on a black background: Pröbst could easily imagine such additional panels at the traffic lights.

Then right-turners could also drive on red.

As reported, a hot topic in the planning phase was access to the fire department.

So far she has been able to move out “satisfactorily,” reports Pröbst.

Once there was almost a crash when a person turning right didn't stop at the white dashed line and almost drove into the fire truck.

A few meters further ahead there is a solid white line.

According to Pröbst, there is still a need for clarification here too.

A meeting will soon take place with those involved at which the small weak points will be addressed.

“Stalking” is no longer necessary

Apart from that, Billmayer also thinks that the situation for road users has become “much more relaxed” with the traffic light regulation.

The danger has been reduced, emphasizes Pröbst.

In the past you had to “stalk” your way into the intersection.

Now you just wait 60 seconds and you can drive.”

Bigger backlogs during rush hour?

Pröbst doesn't find it.

Morning rush hour traffic is “not a problem,” he says.

At night the traffic lights are switched off from 10 p.m. to around 5:30 a.m.

Where zebra crossings used to be sufficient, two traffic lights were installed as part of the major construction site on Strogenstrasse - at the Aufham intersection and at the parish kindergarten.

The traffic light on Thenner Straße was also relocated by 80 meters in view of the backlog, reports Pröbst.

Kindergarten children practiced hard

He also says that the push buttons have an extra sensor on the bottom for people with disabilities, such as those with visual impairment.

If you activate this switch, you have more time to cross the street.

But that is standard for these traffic lights, adds the mayor.

The kindergarten children practiced using it.

His conclusion about the new traffic light: It is “most optimal for safety”.
