Split

In mid-February, the fifth season is celebrated again in many cities in Germany.

If you don't feel like it, you can take a relaxing trip.

Whether carnival, carnival or carnival: Not everyone is keen on the foolish time when many partygoers dress up in elaborate – or less elaborate – costumes to make the streets unsafe.

Even in the carnival strongholds of Cologne and Düsseldorf, things get too much for some people.

If you want to avoid the hustle and bustle but don't want to waste time at home, you can take a leisurely trip to a place where the chance of encountering wild carnivalists is slim.

How about, for example, a ride on the Brockenbahn in the Harz National Park?

Even in winter, with 700 hp, it climbs the summit of the highest mountain in northern Germany - the Brocken.

It starts at the train station in Wernigerode, from where the narrow-gauge railway leads through mystical pine forests.

The steepest section of the route follows from Drei-Annen-Hohne train station before it goes to Brocken train station.

From there, excursionists can enjoy a wonderful panorama of the wild nature of the Harz Mountains.

There is hardly any sign of carnival in North Frisia - so if you are looking for some relaxation, this is the right place for you.

Even in winter you can go on mudflat hikes from Dagebüll or Schlüttsiel to the Halligen, the small marsh islands in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea.

Berchtesgaden is a popular summer destination for active vacationers and nature enthusiasts.

But the national park can also be explored on a hike during the cold season.

The paths are cleared and well maintained when snow falls, and those who wish can take part in one of the numerous guided hikes.
