Highlights: The sixth day of conflict between CGT garbage collection agents and the Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole local authority did not help to ease the situation. Two sequences of negotiations, including one lasting 90 minutes this Tuesday afternoon, did not make it possible to move forward on the demands. “We are not going to block trash collection and transform our city into an open-air dump for the sake of meal tickets,” says Aziza Achlouj, spokesperson for the CGT.

The sixth day of conflict between CGT garbage collection agents and the Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole local authority did not help to ease the situation.

And waste continues to pile up around containers in the streets of the city of Perpignan and in those of the surrounding villages.

Two sequences of negotiations, including one lasting 90 minutes this Tuesday afternoon, did not make it possible to move forward on the demands.

And the technical center where the collection trucks are located is still blocked.

“The elected officials of the Metropolis asked that the CGT be excluded from the negotiations to discuss only with the agents.

They have not granted anything that we are demanding, in particular the Macron purchasing power bonus of 1,000 euros, meal vouchers, additional hiring.

They vaguely promise us answers by next week and they threaten us with sanctions,” explains Aziza Achlouj, spokesperson for the CGT.

“Transform our city into an open-air dump”

“We are not going to block trash collection and transform our city into an open-air dump for the sake of meal tickets and because garbage collectors refuse to wear protective helmets during collection.

This case is surreal.

The CGT, an ultra-minority, is blocking the central depot while the other unions have not moved.

This conflict has no reason to exist,” fumes Louis Aliot, from his office at Perpignan town hall.

The mayor was left out of the negotiations.

He calls for the lifting of the dam and the intervention of the police and places the Pyrénées-Orientales prefecture face its responsibilities.

During a general assembly held this Tuesday at the end of the day, the strikers renewed the movement unanimously but after long divergent discussions.

In front of the municipal technical center of Perpignan, the sixth night of occupation begins this evening.
