President Gabriel Boric referred this Tuesday afternoon to the death of former president Sebastián Piñera, who suffered an accident in his helicopter in the commune of Lago Ranco, Los Ríos Region.
"President Piñera contributed from his vision to building great agreements for the good of the country. He was a democrat from the first hour and genuinely sought what he believed was best for the country. Shortly after, the helicopter fell into Lake Ranco where the death of the former President of Chile was confirmed.
The Head of State confirmed that he instructed that former President Piñera “
be fired with the honors of a State funeral and three days of national mourning decreed
to honor the memory of who was elected president of Chile on two occasions.”
As reported in a previous press release by the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá,
there were three other crew members
on the aircraft in which the former president was traveling , who managed to get out and reach the shore by their own means and be safe.
However, the government authority explained that this was not the case of the former Head of State.
The event occurred in the Iliue sector, where heavy rains occurred this Tuesday.
Carabineros received a report at 2:57 p.m., reporting the accident.
