Recently, three upper school seminars from the Schongauer Welfen-Gymnasium presented the results of their months of work.

The work in the field of history also aroused the interest of the historical association.

Schongau

– Head of the department Walter Ludwig wished the visitors to the event organized in collaboration with the Schongau Historical Association an “entertaining and thoughtful evening” and then left the lectern to the main protagonists of the evening.

First, the students from the P-Seminar “Basic Data and Terms” entered the stage.

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

In September 2022, they set themselves the goal of creating a learning and exercise book that “can be used in history lessons” and is intended, in particular, to convey the basic knowledge of grades 6 to 10 in a clear, understandable manner and with “as diverse exercise tasks as possible”.

Profit for the historical association

Before they were finally able to sell the work to the student body in September 2023, it had been presented to the printer two months earlier.

Despite numerous efforts to finance the project alone, sponsors were ultimately brought on board.

The magazine was also available for sale on that presentation evening for two euros.

Seminar leader Angela Felber announced that she wanted to donate the profits made to the historical association.

The high school students and seminar leaders also heard words of praise from Heide-Maria Krauthauf from the historical association.

The W seminar “Violence in Antiquity” then took those present into the world of Greek mythology.

The student who gave the lecture had dedicated her scientific work to Medusa – the legendary figure whose sight immediately turns into stone.

However, the high school graduate only had a tired smile for the ancient legends with all their heroic figures.

In any case, she finds it “not very heroic” that the demigod Perseus was only supposed to have brought down the monster with snake hair with the active support of the goddess Athena.

In their opinion, only a few mythological figures are real heroes.

Her seminar paper focused particularly on the symbolism behind the Medusa myth.

Student criticizes Sigmund Freud

She even self-confidently criticized Sigmund Freud's attempt at interpretation, who saw the beheading of Medusa as a shocking reaction to young men's deep-rooted fear of castration - an interpretation from which the student "wants to distance herself as much as possible".

Aside from her horror, Medusa has now become a symbolic figure of the “MeToo movement,” she said, referring to a statue in New York.

In a warning and contradicting the legend, a two-meter-tall Medusa holds the head of Perseus in the direction of the court that convicted the former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein.

Finally, two students presented their work, which was dedicated to creating biographies of the victims of National Socialist health policy.

At the Munich Institute for Contemporary History, they were given insights into original clinical documents from the Nazi era, which they were allowed to evaluate as part of their seminar work.

They often quoted verbatim from the documents of the facilities at the time and tried to trace the lives of those affected as best as possible.

Not just for current reasons

The Nazis sometimes described Max R.'s youthful behavior in their documents as "inferior" and "abnormal", and he was sent from institution to institution until he finally ended up in the Herzogsägmühle as a "completely anti-social person".

After spending time in various institutions, the story of Brigitte D. even gets lost on the way to the Uckermark concentration camp.

“People have been robbed of all individuality,” the two students noted.

Everyone should therefore deal with the topic, and not just because of current events.

Words of praise from the seminar leaders and the historical association

The leaders of the three seminars, Angela Felber, Florian Mühlegger and Walter Ludwig, had nothing but praise for the work of their protégés: “This makes being a teacher fun,” said Mühlegger.

Over time, the biographies also “grabbed him emotionally,” reported Walter Ludwig.

The representative of the Schongau Historical Association, Heide-Maria Krauthauf, found it difficult to put into words the commitment of the young researchers.

It was a “very special evening,” she said, and stated that she even wanted to include finished works in the “Welf.”
