The big thing for Sulzemoos and the surrounding area: A Rewe store will be located at the southern entrance to the town on the site of the Avia gas station.
Sulzemoos – This means that a frequently expressed wish from citizens for local shopping opportunities is finally coming true.
The rumor mill in Sulzemoos has been simmering for weeks
The rumor mill had been simmering for a few weeks.
At the most recent meeting of the local council, the secret about the location of a supermarket was revealed: it is the full-range Rewe on the gas station site at the southern entrance to Sulzemoos.
In addition, the first plans were shown and the project was presented to the public.
“The location hits the nail on the head.
People can get supplies close to home again, and the market will certainly be well received beyond the municipal boundaries,” says Mayor Johannes Kneidl happily.
Since the last grocery store in Wiedenzhausen closed in 2011, there has been no retail trade in the community.
“After that, retail development was always an issue, including in the municipal election program, but at that time there was not enough potential and purchasing power,” explains Kneidl.
This has changed over time, says Kneidl, but until now no suitable space was available.
The sale of the gas station site has now given rise to the possibility of subsequent use.
In Rewe, the community found the “dream partner”.
One thing is important to the town hall boss: “The Rewe company is investing itself, there is no project developer involved.
“That’s a clear commitment to the location,” he says.
Rewe presents plans to the local council
The mayor invited Rewe project manager Isabel Chardon and Achim Latta, who is responsible for Rewe expansion in southern Bavaria, to present the company and the new store.
At the location where workshops are still located today, a modern and sustainable full-range store with 1,800 square meters of total usable space, of which 1,500 square meters is sales area, is to be built.
In addition to the classic market range with up to 15,000 items, there will also be a drugstore department, a drinks market and a bakery shop.
The northern part of the building houses technical rooms, storage and preparation rooms for meat and sausage products.
According to Latta, 75 to 80 parking spaces will be available to customers on the part of the area that is currently used as a parking space for mobile homes - more than required by the municipality's parking regulations.
About 50 people will work in the market.
“But not all of them full time,” emphasizes Latta.
According to Chardon and Latta, the market is run by an independent merchant and Rewe acts as the landlord.
“The market is advertised internally, after which all applicants have to compete and the person who appears to Rewe to be the most suitable becomes the operator,” said Latta.

Rewe market should become a “green building”.
The building is intended to be a so-called “green building”.
According to the trading company, the concept combines daylight architecture with energy-saving construction techniques, the best insulation, sustainable materials and the use of renewable energies.
“The green building works in a CO2-neutral manner,” says the concept.
Rewe would also like to bring local producers on board.
With the “local partnership”, Rewe creates suitable framework conditions for smaller and local businesses to sell their products directly through the markets – even in small quantities.
The gas station with the adjacent residential building will be retained and continue to operate.
“Rewe has nothing to do with it,” said Chardon.
Access to the site will continue to be via the existing large gas station entrance in the future.
Mayor Kneidl: “The location is close to the local people and can also be reached on foot.” In addition, no retail outlets will be “broken” on site.
Above-average purchasing power
According to Latta, Rewe is not worried about the market potential.
“The community of Sulzemoos has an above-average purchasing power in the food sector at 2,175 euros per person per year.” “In addition, the market will of course benefit from the around 1,000 employees in the commercial area and from the proximity to the A8 motorway and the location on the state road.
The gas station will also act as a frequency generator,” adds Kneidl.
But from the town hall boss's point of view, the community will also benefit from other aspects. “The market will not only be an important supplier in the region, but also a meeting place for young and old,” Kneidl is convinced.
In addition, jobs would also be created for students and young people.
“Since it is an independent business, the trade tax remains in the municipality, and many millions of euros in purchasing power no longer leave the municipality.”
And so it continues: After Carnival, initial discussions regarding land-use planning will take place.
Once the building permit is received, it will take around nine months until the market is up and running.
“So the new store will be ready at the end of next year at best,” says Kneidl.
