In order to be able to finance its tasks, the city of Weilheim wants, among other things, to increase the dog tax.

But how many dogs are there in Weilheim?

Weilheim – The Weilheim city council will decide on increases in trade tax and dog tax on Thursday, February 8th.

Both have already been priced into the city budget for 2024.

The town hall says that the tasks can no longer be financed otherwise.

Increasing the dog tax should bring in an additional 44,000 euros per year

While the increase in the business tax rate (from 380 to 400 percentage points) is expected to bring an additional 780,000 euros per year into the city coffers, the city of Weilheim expects additional annual revenue of around 44,000 euros from the planned increase in the dog tax.

The underlying numbers for this calculation: According to current surveys by the city administration, there are 895 dog owners in the district town, the total number of dogs is 977 - as of the end of November 2023. The more detailed breakdown of these numbers: 823 Weilheim residents each have a dog, 64 keep one two dogs, six citizens each have three dogs and two citizens each have four dogs.

Seven fighting dogs in Weilheim – but without “increased danger”

Starting this year, the tax rate for the first dog is to be increased from 60 to 100 euros, and for each additional dog from 100 to 200 euros.

1000 euros are then due for each fighting dog (previously 700 euros).

According to the town hall, there are currently seven listed fighting dogs registered in Weilheim.

But these, according to the city administration, “are not considered fighting dogs if it is proven in individual cases by expert reports that the animal does not show increased aggressiveness or danger.

If a negative certificate is issued, this dog can no longer be legally treated as a fighting dog.” Since these seven dogs all have such an unlimited negative certificate, they are currently taxed at 60 euros each.

City Council budget meeting is public

The budget meeting of the Weilheim City Council - which also deals with increases in the dog tax and the business tax assessment rate - is public and begins on Thursday, February 8th, at 6:30 p.m. in the town hall (large meeting room).
