Too old for a cat? Widow criticizes animal shelter – chairwoman reacts

2024-02-06T11:52:54.681Z

Highlights: Bettina Brandner, 76, was denied a cat at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen animal shelter. The Mittenwald resident had previously made her own home with a spacious garden suitable for animals. She had to fork out 2,000 euros in veterinary costs alone when Oskar suddenly became seriously ill. On November 19, 2020, the cat had to be put out of his suffering. “I wouldn't give an 80-year-old a puppy,” says Tessy Lödermann, chairwoman of the animal protection association.

A woman from Mittenwald doesn't speak well of the Garmisch-Partenkirchen animal shelter.

Despite having the best references, she is said to have been denied a cat there.

Mittenwald

– Two people have found each other: Bettina Brandner is sitting on her blue couch in the living room and caressing her sissy.

The two-year-old cat has been enriching the 76-year-old widow's life for a month.

And it seems that humans and animals have found happiness.

“My everything,” enthuses the daughter-in-law of the late former mayor Josef Brandner (1917 to 2005).

The Mittenwald native discovered her pet at the Innsbruck-Mentlberg animal shelter and took it to her heart.

But why did the trained nurse travel to Tyrol to do this?

Finally, there is also a well-known facility with a good reputation in Schmalenau in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Still, I wouldn't give an 80-year-old a puppy.

Tessy Lödermann, chairwoman of the animal protection association

According to her own information, Bettina Brandner was simply rejected there.

An employee is said to have told her that she was too old for another four-legged friend.

Furthermore, her house on Dekan-Karl-Platz is located in the middle of town on a busy street.

The case was almost three years ago, but the anger over it has not gone away to this day.

Now the 76-year-old wants to make her case public.

Request rejected at animal shelter: “I was suddenly alone in the house”

Which in turn causes Tessy Lödermann (67), chairwoman of the leading animal protection association in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district, to shake her head.

“I just think it’s unfair.” The former member of the Green Party’s state parliament is referring to the time factor.

She is “not familiar with” the Brandner case; it is the first time she has heard of it.

No wonder: “With 800 placements and 1,300 animals per year.”

One of the successful placements that Lödermann is talking about also took place on January 6, 2018 in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen animal shelter with Bettina Brandner.

Shortly before, she had buried her husband Sepp after a short, serious illness.

In Tyrol she found the extremely shy Sissi

“Suddenly I was all alone in the house” – my daughter in Munich, my grandson in the Bundeswehr.

So the widow contacted Christine Sprenger, the then chairwoman of the Mittenwald Animal Welfare Association.

A short time later, Brandner brought home the three-year-old cat Oskar from the Schmalenau animal shelter.

The Mittenwald resident had previously made her own home with a spacious garden suitable for animals: a cat ladder or cat flap.

“Everything is there, I even had the balcony door changed,” says Brandner.

“It was a lot of effort.” But what can you do for animal welfare?

She had to fork out 2,000 euros in veterinary costs alone when Oskar suddenly became seriously ill.

Ultimately in vain.

On November 19, 2020, the cat had to be put out of his suffering.

Bettina Brandner will never forget this day.

Now she was alone again.

“I fought with myself for a long time.” Ultimately, the desire for a four-legged friend was greater.

But six years later, she was obviously no longer considered adoptable in the same animal shelter.

So we went to Tyrol.

The Mittenwald resident quickly found the extremely shy Sissi, who immediately struck up a connection with her Bavarian owner, which even amazed the nurse.

After a rabies vaccination, three weeks of quarantine and an EU passport, the cat finally went to Mittenwald on January 5, 2024.

Vaccinated, neutered, chipped: 70 cats are waiting for buyers

Apparently other regulations apply beyond the national border.

In Germany, on the other hand, the German animal shelter guidelines are law - and also clear working instructions in the asylum at Schmalenau.

According to Tessy Lödermann, when it comes to animal placement, the procedure is always the same: advice - contact with people/animals - self-disclosure - place check - vaccination certificate plus delivery contract.

And of course there is no age limit in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, assures the chairwoman.

“Still, I wouldn’t give an 80-year-old a puppy.” From a purely biological point of view.

Because at best, the owner should outlive their pet.

“This has nothing to do with discrimination,” but is based, among other things, on experience.

“We are happy if we can mediate, otherwise we could close in March,” explains Lödermann.

As of today, there are 70 cats in the animal shelter alone - all vaccinated, neutered and chipped - waiting for buyers, there are 300 animals in total - including the 36 hamsters that have recently arrived.

In other words: The animal shelter in Garmisch-Partenkirchen needs animal lovers with honest intentions more than ever.

And if someone like Bettina Brandner actually has a bad experience there, says Lödermann, “then you still have the opportunity to talk to me.”
