Update from February 6th, 5:20 a.m.:

Regardless of the war against the Russian invaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not want to lose sight of expanding his country's economy.

During visits to the Dnipro, Cherkasy and Kropyvnytsky regions, he spoke with representatives of the regional authorities not only about strengthening the military, but also about important economic issues, Zelensky reported on Monday in his evening video address.

“The state must support the recovery of Ukrainian production,” he said.

One of the top priorities in Ukraine is to provide the best possible support to entrepreneurs in contributing to economic growth and job creation.

“Last year we laid the foundation for Ukraine’s economic stability,” Zelensky said.

The maritime corridor for exports is working and the energy sector is better protected against Russian attacks.

In addition, Kiev has reached agreements with foreign partners on long-term support for Ukraine and financial programs.

Kherson closed to foreigners

Update from February 5th, 10:11 p.m.:

The Ukrainian authorities have initially closed the city of Kherson and the surrounding area to foreigners.

The trigger was the death of two French employees of a non-governmental organization due to Russian attacks.

This measure applies to both members of diplomatic missions and employees of international aid organizations, the regional military administration announced on Telegram.

“No one can guarantee security in time of war, but we must clearly establish the presence of people in places of active hostilities,” it said.

The two Frenchmen were killed in a Russian artillery attack in the town of Beryslaw on Thursday.

Three other French citizens and a Ukrainian were injured in this attack.

Ukrainska Pravda

quoted an official statement as saying.

Ukraine is getting more F-16 fighter jets

Update from February 5th, 4:10 p.m.:

The Netherlands wants to supply the Ukrainian Air Force with another six F-16 fighter jets.

Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren announced this on the short message service X (formerly Twitter).

The country had previously announced that it wanted to deliver 18 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.

The latest decision brings the number of F-16s to be delivered to 24. “Air sovereignty is essential to deter Russian aggression,” Ollongren wrote in her message.

The increased delivery of F-16 jets is likely to be well received by President Zelensky and Co.

In contrast, Ukraine wasn't exactly thrilled when Australia apparently wanted to deliver decommissioned F-18 aircraft last year.

The jets were referred to as “flying trash.”

Attack on bakery in Ukraine war: Russia speaks of “terrorist attack” in occupied region

Update from February 5th, 2:30 p.m.:

According to media reports, an administrator appointed by the Kremlin for the Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories was killed when a bakery was shelled in the city of Lysychansk in eastern Ukraine, which was annexed by Russian forces.

The body of the Minister of Civil Defense in the Luhansk Region, Alexei Poteleshchenko, was found under the rubble of the collapsed building, the Moscow-appointed head of government of the Luhansk Region, Sergei Kozlov, said on Monday.

According to Russian reports, a total of 28 people were killed in the attack on Saturday, including a child.

The Russian leadership, which has been waging a bloody war of aggression against Ukraine for almost two years with many civilian casualties, strongly condemned the shelling.

“The ongoing strikes against civilian infrastructure, in this case against a bakery, are a terrible terrorist attack,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Foreign Office spokeswoman Maria Zakharova had previously claimed that Kiev had fired on the bakery knowing that there were many civilians there at the time.

Poteleschtschenko had been in the ministerial post in Luhansk since autumn 2023.

Before that, he headed the fire department in the region.

The colonel was not a pure civilian.

“A combat comrade and friend who passed through the forge of battles in the summer campaign of 2014 has been killed,” Koslow also wrote.

Russia is probably modernizing Iranian drones: attacks on front lines in the Ukrainian war

Update from February 5th, 11 a.m.:

According to Ukrainian air force spokesman Yuri Ignat, Russia is now using the Iranian “Shahed” kamikaze drones more often directly on the front lines.

“The enemy is modernizing them,” he said, according to the Unian news agency.

Russia is making technical changes and will continue to improve the drone in the future “to make it less vulnerable to air defense systems,” Ignat warned.

Since a large number of these drones are often sent out, Ukrainian units cannot destroy all of the Shaheds.

Russia also wants to increase the production of these kamikaze drones.

“The Russian Federation has the ability to produce Shaheds,” he said.

The capacity is not unlimited, but while Iran will continue to supply the Russian war with drones, Russia also wants to produce more on its own soil.

Zelensky orders stronger air defenses

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered a strengthening of air defenses during a visit to the front in the Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia regions.

The background is increased attacks by the Russian military with combat drones and missiles on this central section of the front, which is located in southeastern Ukraine.

“The danger is constantly high, and Russia sees the region as one of the main targets for its terrorist attacks,” Zelenskyj reported on his visit to the region on Sunday evening.

Air defense there is also being massively expanded to protect economic activities.

“We are working on expanding the capabilities to launch missiles and drones.”

During his trip to the region, Zelensky also visited Zaporizhzhia and the fronts in front of it.

Zelensky demanded that air defense and electronic warfare resources also need to be strengthened there and in Kryvyi Rih.

This is necessary to protect the critical infrastructure, i.e. the electricity and water supply.
