From beer to the stock market, from foccacia to fondue: the adult education center in Würmtal focuses on the many facets of Europe in the summer semester.

Planegg

- The citizens of the European Union are called to vote for the European Parliament for the tenth time at the beginning of June.

The adult education center in Würmtal, based on Planegger Marktplatz, is taking this as an opportunity to focus on Europe in its new semester program: politics, economics, culture, languages and culinary arts.

“The VHS thrives on the fact that the borders are open and people are moving in,” says director Julika Bake.

In order to be able to demonstrate the importance of Europe through personal biographies, the VHS invites you to a colorful evening with the language lecturers on Wednesday, March 20th under the title “Europe in the Würmtal”.

Also taking part are Angela Ditillo (Italy), Asa Agren (Sweden), Maryse Dantec-Drechsler (France) and Marija Flüchter-Krstulja (Croatia).

“The world in transition”

On three dates from April 23rd it will be about “The world in transition: The EU and its relations with the USA, China and the Middle East”.

A trip to the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and a visit to the European Central Bank are planned for June 3rd.

And on June 5th, the focus will be on “The German parties before the European elections”.

“Discovering the languages of Europe” is the title of a series that deals with the continent’s smaller languages.

This includes Icelandic as well as Russian, Polish, Swedish, Slovak, Czech and Turkish.

The star, however, is Croatian: Seven Croatian courses are on offer, starting with Croatian without prior knowledge.

“Croatian is booming,” says Bake.

About four years ago, the language was added to the program at the request of a VHS visitor.

The area has been growing since then.

New this year is “Croatian for Holidays”, four times 90 minutes, starting on July 6th.

Culinary Europe focuses on France, Switzerland and Italy, for example with breadsticks, Burgundy cuisine and Swiss loaves.

In beverage science, “A beery journey through Europe” is scheduled for April 23rd and an event on European sparkling wines on May 3rd: sparkling wine, champagne, crémant, prosecco.

804 events

804 VHS events are listed in the program for the summer semester, which begins on February 26th and runs until the summer holidays.

In the winter semester, when there are traditionally more draws, there were 842.

The series of topics on artificial intelligence is new.

“It’s important to have a basic understanding, but also to try it out in practice,” says Bake.

“From theory to practice: ChatGPT in application” will convey both on June 18th.

The “Everyday digital life” series that began in the winter semester will be continued.

Julia Zeller from the Bavarian Consumer Center will provide information in two online lectures about “Online Dating” (April 9th) and “Dealing with cookies while surfing (April 16th).

In the VHS rooms at Planegger Marktplatz 10a, the topics include “Smart and contactless payments” (April 9th) and “Voice assistants on smartphones” (May 7th).

The area of “art and culture” has been extremely in demand since last semester, says Susanne Reicheneder from the VHS team.

“The basic drawing courses were blown up in no time.

And the interest shows no signs of waning.

Many say that they find themselves in the three hours in the morning.” 18 courses in the summer semester revolve around drawing and painting, some of which are offered twice.

77 events are summarized under “Young VHS”, starting with PEKIP, the Prague parent-child program, for babies a few weeks old and mostly their mothers, to the writing workshop for young people aged 14 and over.

New is the visit to an organic farm in Traubing, which is offered for five to ten year olds on April 13th and June 15th.
