The tragic story of Elizabeth Fritzl was first revealed in 2009.

Her father, Josef Fritzl, a former civil engineer, sexually abused her when she was 11. When Elizabeth tried to run away from home, he built a hidden cellar under the soundproof house, equipped with a small kitchen and toilet.

He imprisoned her there when she was 18 and told his wife Rosemary, 69, that their daughter had joined a cult and left home.

To substantiate his arguments, he presented her with a fabricated letter that Elizabeth allegedly wrote before she left in which she claims she will never return.

For 24 years Elizabeth experienced hell on earth.

She was raped more than 3,000 times by her father, became pregnant by him several times, underwent countless abortions and gave birth to 7 children - six of whom survived. Three were adopted by Fritzl and his wife and grew up in their house on the upper floors.

He told his wife and the authorities that the babies just appeared on his doorstep.

The other three children never saw the light of day in their lives until they were rescued.

One of her children, Michael, born in 1996, died as a result of neglect and his body was burned by the father.

In 2008, after 24 years in a dark basement, Elizabeth's daughter, who was already 19 years old, needed urgent medical treatment due to a life-threatening kidney disease.

Yosef drove her to the hospital and told the medical staff that Elizabeth had joined a cult and sent her sick daughter to him for treatment.

The medical team began to suspect Joseph and tried to locate the mother of the sick girl.

Elizabeth begged Joseph to allow her to visit her daughter and he finally agreed to allow her and her children to visit her on the condition that they would not say a word and immediately return to captivity.

It was the first time Elizabeth had seen daylight in 24 years.

At this point the medical staff realized that something was wrong and called the police.

When she agreed to reveal her horror story, Josef Fritzl was arrested on the spot and after a short trial that lasted 4 days, he was sent to life imprisonment on charges of murdering one of Elizabeth's babies, incest, captivity and countless counts of rape.

Today he is 88 years old and lives in prison.

And what happened to Elizabeth since then?

Josef Fritzl's daughter, now 56 years old, lives just half an hour away from the hellish basement where her father held her captive and raped her thousands of times, the Daily Mail Online revealed this week.

After the trial, Elizabeth and the children received new identities - and she became close to the bodyguard who protected her after she was released from prison and the horrors she experienced were revealed.

In 2019, she married the bodyguard Thomas Wagner, who was 23 years younger than her, and they live together in a two-story detached house about a 30-minute drive from the city of Amstetten in the village of Tanten - which is also a short distance from the infamous Nazi concentration camp Mauthausen.

Across a bridge over the Danube River, the usually snow-covered fields were muddy and waterlogged after recent heavy rains and the sky was still gray and gloomy when Daily Mail representatives approached the small village of just a few hundred people.

A gray wooden fence surrounds the orange-painted house and security cameras are on the exterior walls, to monitor every visitor to Elizabeth's house, which has a carefully arranged garden with a small pond.

Directly opposite is her daughter Kerstin's house, and both houses overlook flat farmland close to the Danube River.

The family is said to have settled in the village after Fritzl's eldest son, Harald, moved there and told his sister how isolated the place was.

The locals hardly talk about the family and don't watch information about them, but it is known that Elizabeth - who now has long hair - attended the local dance ball earlier this month and occasionally goes out to eat at the village restaurant.

One of the residents said: 'Elizabeth and some of the older children still live here and are occasionally seen at the restaurant and at community events in the village.

Everyone knows the background story, but no one talks about the past - they have a new life and people respect

that."

And the local priest confirmed that the residents are aware of the family but keep their presence a secret from the world.

More on the story that shocked the world,

the first words of the person who was imprisoned and raped for 24 years by her father were revealed.

Josef Pritzel divorced his wife - "did not come to visit the prison"

according to the newspaper "Osterreich", Elizabeth married her bodyguard with whom she spent months together after her release from her father's captivity and they married when she was 52. A source close to her said at the time: "They are a couple, everyone saw from the beginning how safe she felt with him. The relationship with him gave Elizabeth 'renewed strength' in her journey towards normalcy."

Fritzl wants to move to another prison and eat survivors from his cannibal residence

Meanwhile Yosef Fritzl himself also 'strives for normality' and in the days to come he wants to be released from the psychiatric prison where he is serving his sentence and move to a normal prison.

In a statement made through her lawyer Eva Pelez at her father's trial, Elizabeth said she wants him never to be released. Attorney Pelez said: "She wants the defendant to bear responsibility for his actions until death.

He made himself the master of life and death.

He must be punished for this."

Fritzl was convicted of rape, incest, enslavement, coercion, and murder by neglect of his newborn son, and was sentenced to life imprisonment in a psychiatric prison. Life did not light up for him in prison: other inmates at the Gersten prison for criminals with a psychiatric background broke his teeth, which forced him to change his name to Meyerhoff.

"He shuts himself up in his cell, watches TV, grows tomatoes and writes about his life as an electrician," his lawyer told Bild. "He tans through the bars, takes care of his fitness and wants to live 100 years old." According to her, his neighbor in the next cell is a cannibal, "who prepares him Wiener Schnitzel and Blinches." "Fritzl lives in a world of hallucinations and dreams that his daughter will soon marry the former tennis player Boris Becker."

Fritzl already tried to be released about two and a half years ago, but in June 2022 Austrian Supreme Court judges rejected his petition to be transferred to a regular prison. But last month a court in the city of Krems an der Donau ordered his transfer to a non-regular prison after a closed hearing said he "no longer poses a threat to commit further crimes." However, prosecutors, who were not present At the hearing, an objection has now been lodged with a higher court in Vienna which will soon hear the appeal. His lawyer Astrid Wagner told MailOnline: 'The claimants can try but they won't win, their case has no chance.

It will only prolong the discussions by a few months, but I am sure it will be passed.

I spoke to him after the news about the objection that was filed because he was scared by it, but I told him there was nothing to worry about and he would be fine."
