Wooden churches: Cemetery redesign is gaining momentum

Highlights: Holzkirchen has pursued the goal of making the old cemetery look like a park. It could start in March – provided the community receives the hoped-for Leader funding. The idea is to use the ever-increasing vacant grave space (there are currently around 230 vacant grave sites) on the 1.5 hectare area to create an inner-city green oasis. New graves will only be placed in a designated area, so that the remaining part will be transformed into a publicly usable park without graves by 2035.

It should also become greener overall with meadows instead of gravel areas.

For years, the community of Holzkirchen has pursued the goal of making the old cemetery look like a park.

It could start in March – provided the community receives the hoped-for Leader funding.

Holzkirchen

– The application process has recently started, and the chances are good that Holzkirchen will actually receive the estimated 29,535 euros from the pot of the LEADER regional development program.

At least the decision-making committee of the LAG management has approved the project, but this does not yet represent a final funding commitment, as community spokeswoman Annika Walther emphasizes.

The municipality is currently in the process of obtaining the necessary documents to submit the final application.

This includes, among other things, a market town council decision that is expected to be made next Tuesday.

The community plans to submit the official application about a week later.

It cannot be said exactly whether and when the funding decision will come from the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry, says Walther.

In total, the administration expects costs of 70,293 euros for the redesign of the cemetery at Oskar-von-Miller-Platz, which - depending on the funding decision - should begin in March.

This emerges from the project description that Holzkirchen submitted to the LAG management.

40,758 euros should therefore be financed with own funds.

Many graves are abandoned - leaving gaps

As reported, the municipality had already commissioned the Munich office TRR Landschaftsarchitekten to create a rough concept in 2020.

This defines design potential and possible immediate measures based on the grave occupancy and grave sites that become vacant.

However, the project was put on hold for cost reasons.

The idea is to use the ever-increasing vacant grave space (there are currently around 230 vacant grave sites) on the 1.5 hectare area to create an inner-city green oasis.

Although the cemetery will remain a burial site, new graves will only be placed in a designated area, so that the remaining part will be transformed into a publicly usable park without graves by 2035.

Flowering areas, shady trees and seating

With the LEADER funding, the municipality wants to concentrate on immediate measures, the implementation of which, according to the project description, should take place by October 2024.

This includes the dissolution of the gravel areas.

Instead, meadows and flowering areas should be sown.

The entrance area in particular should be greener.

The community also wants to plant shade-providing and climate-resilient trees, create more seating, set up additional trash cans and possibly a water dispenser.

The paths are to be renewed, and an insect hotel is also included in the project description.

The community also hopes that the redesign will have positive effects on the local climate, strengthening rainwater retention and biodiversity.

After the implementation period ends in October, the redesign should be seen as an ongoing process, said Walther.
