Highlights: WWF, more can be done on the EU climate target - Infrastructure & Cities. "To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees we must reach climate neutrality by 2050 on a global scale" "It would be fairer not to stop at 90%, but to aim for zero net emissions by 2040", says WWF. All sectors, including agriculture, "will have to reduce emissions significantly", adds WWF. "We need to move towards healthier diets with lower levels of meat and dairy consumption"

The EU Commission indicates the 2040 emissions reduction target as 90% and for the WWF "this is an important step" but "it is in everyone's interest to achieve climate neutrality sooner". (HANDLE)

The EU Commission indicates the 2040 emissions reduction target as 90% and for the WWF "this is an important step" but "it is in everyone's interest to reach climate neutrality sooner".

"To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees we must reach climate neutrality by 2050 on a global scale - observes the NGO - Considering the EU's responsibility for historical emissions, it would be fairer not to stop at 90%, but to aim for zero net emissions by 2040".

As part of the 90% target, the Commission has also indicated how sectors should contribute to efforts to reduce emissions, explains the WWF according to which "it is clear that insufficient action is foreseen on the front of land use, land use change of soil and forestry, especially through the restoration and protection of natural ecosystems".

All sectors, including agriculture, explains the environmentalist association, "will have to reduce emissions significantly and we need to move towards healthier diets with lower levels of meat and dairy consumption. For agriculture, the paradox is even more evident: the more it accelerates decarbonisation, the greater possibilities there are to limit the extreme phenomena that have already brought agricultural activities to their knees in many areas and even in some regions, such as Romagna in Italy and Thessaly in Greece. Above all, the greater the possibilities of preventing the sidestabilize and farming becomes very, very difficult."

According to the WWF, "all fossil fuel subsidies should be eliminated immediately and the resources freed up directed to support the ecological transition by helping families and businesses. The political framework must be strengthened, i.e. combined with adequate social policy measures".
