“Choose France”, “French Tech”, “Next 40”: defenders of the French language sue the government all the way to the Council of State

For the Association Francophonie Avenir (Afrav), the English words “choose”, “french” and “next” being perfectly translatable into French, “these marks contravene the linguistic law of our country, known as the Toubon law”.


“How can we want to be a major exporting country

,” protests the Association Francophonie Avenir (Afrav), “

if we are not even capable of selling our own language, a major international language?”

The fact remains that the State will continue to use its slogan “Choose France”, the name “French Tech” or the label “Next 40”.

At least for a few more months.

If Afrav has just lost, on appeal, three trials which opposed it to the State concerning these brands in English of which it is the creator and the owner, it is not giving up: the association has decided to appeal to the Council of State, and his lawyer is working on a QPC (priority question of constitutionality).

In 2019, Afrav asked, in a letter to the Prime Minister, to renounce the “Choose France” brand, registered with the INPI (National Institute of Industrial Property).
