It all happened very quickly.
Forestry officials have shot the M90 bear in Trentino.
The shooting brings animal protection organizations to the barricades.

As soon as the firing decree was signed, the M90 bear was literally attacked in Trentino (Italy).
Foresters tracked down the bear in just a few hours.
Animal rights activists are horrified.
“The brown bear M90 was a dangerous animal,” says a statement from the province of Trentino.
Now “Sony”, as animal protection organizations call him, is dead. After the fatal attack by a bear on a jogger in Trentino, a debate about the bear population was sparked in 2023.
In January, the province decided to kill eight bears a year.
That alone was incomprehensible for animal protection organizations.
Now the first bear shooting is fueling the debate.

“Literally an execution” – Animal rights activists want to avenge the death of bear M90
The decree was signed by Governor Maurizio Fugatti on Tuesday morning (February 6) and had already been implemented “during the afternoon,” the province openly announced.
A team from the Trentino Forestry Corps was deployed in the mountain area of the Bassas Val di Sole and researched the bear using a radio collar.
The M90 was also identified by his ear tag.
According to authorities, M90 was considered dangerous.
The brown bear is very friendly and often stays in urban and suburban areas, the province said.
On several occasions he intentionally stalked people.
In summer the bear was seen in the towns of Val di Sole.
On January 28th, he followed hikers above Mezzana for half a kilometer along a forest road.

The Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra) had no objection to the killing.
So the M90 bear was removed as quickly as possible.

“This is literally an execution,” Italian TV channel Rai quoted Massimo Vitturi, head of LAV’s wildlife department, as saying.
While Fuggati signed the killing decree, they were already standing by with rifles, animal protection organizations write on Platform X under the title in capital letters: “M90 was executed.” A demonstration in Trento is planned for Saturday.
The animal protection organization Animalisti Italiani reacts even more drastically.
“The death of M90 calls for revenge,” reads a post on Facebook by Animalisti Italiani.
The bear could also have been removed from the “Casteller” wildlife refuge or from the region, they criticize in a statement.
The death sentence against the M90 was the episode on January 28th, when the bear chased a couple on the forest road without causing any damage.
Nothing was done to prevent encounters between humans and animals.
It is also important to know what you should definitely not do if you encounter a bear.
According to
Rai,
the Environment Ministry in Rome spoke up.
“Shooting down must not be the only alternative,” said Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin.
“We all have to make more efforts to live together peacefully.”
The bears were reintroduced to Trentino years ago with a protection program.
The population has now grown to around 100.
Even minor incidents with bears often cause a stir.
Not far from Lake Garda, a car plowed into a full-grown bear.
