“The house of horror”, as the association behind this affair called it.

According to our colleagues from France 3 Côte d'Azur and BFM Nice Côte d'Azur, hundreds of dead cats were discovered this Tuesday in a private home living in the small town of La Roquette-sur-Siagne, a village located around forty kilometers west of Nice (Alpes-Maritimes).

A sordid find since confirmed by the local prefecture, which however does not give further details on the number of animals concerned.

According to our colleagues, 117 cats were discovered in this house: 50 were buried in the garden and 67 others were frozen in a chalet located in the same land.

Furthermore, in addition to these dozens of corpses, the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture explains that the owner of the premises also had “around fifteen cats and twelve kittens, in unsanitary conditions”.

“Strong odors” and “meows”

The poor animals were seized by agents of the health and animal protection service of the departmental population protection department.

According to BFM Nice Côte d'Azur, they should be treated and taken care of by "around ten groups" who have joined forces with the Association of Animal Protection Investigators, at the origin of the report of this sad affair.

As our colleagues explain, it was the neighbors who made this report, while the owner had already experienced a similar case in 2019, with 58 cats which had been seized at the time.

Five years later, it was the “strong odors” and “meows” noted by the association and the gendarmes that finally led to this new search.
