Crotone prosecutors on Wednesday requested that Gun Ufuk, a 29-year-old Turk who was allegedly one of the human traffickers on the Summer Love migrant boat that sank off the Calabrian town of Cutro last February in a disaster that claimed at least 94 lives, be given to 20 -yearprison term.
The prosecutors also requested that he be sentenced to pay 2.1 million euros in damages.
Ufuk, who is charged with aiding illegal immigration, guilty shipwreck and causing death as a consequence of another crime, is the only one of the alleged traffickers to have chosen a fast-track trial.
He was arrested in Austria in March after being among the 80people to survive the disaster and fleeing from Italy.
The prime minister's office is among the civil complainants in the case and has requested one million euros in compensation.
Two other alleged traffickers, both Pakistani nationals, are also standing trial in relation to the disaster.
