The students at the Bad Tölz technical and vocational high school want to send a strong signal against racism and exclusion.

Now they have officially been awarded a title.

The godfather of the project is the ice hockey player and former student Korbinian Holzer.

Bad Tölz – Since last year they have been part of the “School without Racism – School with Courage” network, in which 4,300 schools across Germany participate.

Now the official title ceremony took place.

“Everyone involved in school life was 100 percent behind it from the start,” reports headmaster Andreas Stefan.

The school has always lived the basic idea of inclusion of all people.

The initiative came from the students and was driven forward together with the teacher Albulena Imeri.

“We want to be a role model with this project,” explained student Jennifer Merl.

Every person has the right to be who they are.

Title is “an active commitment”

The title “School without Racism – School with Courage” is not a prize or an award that you receive at the end of a process, says Tobias Wolf, representative of the network.

On the contrary: “It is a living confession and an active commitment.” When others experience hatred or prejudice, one should not look away, Wolf appealed to the students and asked them to stand up “together as a school for respect, tolerance and equality”. .

This is to be implemented, among other things, within the framework of various projects, the design and planning of which the students are responsible for.

Especially these days, the topic of racism is more relevant than ever, said teacher Albulena Imeri against the backdrop of right-wing extremist mass deportation plans.

Many of those affected, including herself, would consider leaving Germany if necessary.

This makes it all the more important to prevent the emergence of such ideologies at school, says Imeri.

“I’m glad how many people are taking a stand and taking a stand against the right-wing during the protests.”

Everyday racism is an important topic

The teacher also wants to draw attention to the problem of everyday racism: For example, as a person with a foreign-sounding name, you often hear sayings like “But you know German very well.”

These attacks on a personal level showed that you don't seem to really belong after all.

“This is where we want to start as a school and break down prejudices,” explained Imeri.

The mayor of Tölz, Ingo Mehner, also confirmed this.

Exclusion and discrimination manifest themselves in a wide variety of forms, such as racism, sexism, anti-Muslim or homophobia.

Mehner therefore advocated that as a society we listen to each other more and exchange opinions.

Especially if you don't have the same opinion, you can learn a lot from each other, said the mayor.

At the same time, it is necessary to “define the diversity of opinions from the extremes”.

District Administrator Josef Niedermaier drew a link to democracy.

Dealing with the other person “at eye level and with arguments” and accepting opposing opinions is an important prerequisite for democratic processes.

Clear words from Korbinian Holzer

The speeches were lightened up by short contributions from the students in the form of posters, a song and a poem that called for a clear no to all forms of exclusion and discrimination.

Ex-ECT ice hockey player Korbinian Holzer, who was won over as a project sponsor by his old school, also found clear words: “Every face has its own story,” said the national player.

“But everyone deserves their chance.” School in particular must be a safe place where everyone is welcome and valued.

Based on sports reporter Marcel Reif, he gave the students the following advice: “Be a person with heart and mind.” (Franziska Selter)
