165 missions, of which just nine fires: The focus of the Schliersee fire department is shifting more and more towards technical assistance.

Schliersee

– If you take the deployment statistics of the Schliersee Volunteer Fire Department for the past year, the force is almost likely to be thinking about changing its name.

Because the nine fires to be averted in 2023 only appear in fourth place in the overall overview, with a share of six percent.

Far behind the - as has been the case for years - the dominant technical assistance services (106, 65 percent), the also usual false alarms (30, 18 percent) and the other operations (eleven, seven percent).

Five NBC hazardous materials operations and a security guard (at Leonhardi) complete the list of a total of 165 reasons for deployment.

As Commander Andreas Dietmannsberger reported at the general meeting, technical assistance (THL) accounted for over half of the operations in 2022.

The significant increase of 39 alerts last year can primarily be explained by the devastating hailstorm at the end of August.

Dietmannsberger cited door openings in the event of acute danger or assistance in traffic accidents as an example of the THL.

Other operations would include securing smaller sporting and cultural events.

After all, NBC hazardous substance operations are contamination caused by oil, leaked fuel or harmful gases.

According to the commander, the number of fires has decreased slightly, but the fires have been larger.

However, three had already been extinguished when the troops arrived, with Dietmannsberger praising the courageous intervention of private individuals.

Operations every other day

If you take the time factor, which is relevant for volunteers, the 66 active members (62 men and four women) have had a “very demanding year”.

They worked 1,786 hours in fire service and were deployed on average every other day.

With their six vehicles and two boats, they were always “reliably deployed within the legally required assistance period of ten minutes,” according to the report on the general meeting.

The more than 650 pieces of equipment were used on a wide variety of occasions.

Honored: Chairman Stefan Führer (r.) and his deputy Christoph Bolz (l.) award (from left) Veit Lange (10 years of membership), Matthias Lang (20), Alexander Grinev (10) and Marinus Scharmann (10) for their many years of membership Loyalty to the Schliersee Volunteer Fire Department.

In 2023, the volunteers worked a total of more than 3,750 hours.

Added to the time account were the 1,350 hours of practice and the effort for further training courses as well as fire safety education in kindergartens and schools.

The 13 members of the youth fire brigade also completed an impressive 610 hours of training in 2023.

The commander was particularly pleased that two fire brigade candidates were able to take active duty last year.

If you add up all the areas mentioned above, the active members spent around 3,750 documented hours with the fire department in 2023.

This corresponds to around 2.3 times the annual working hours of full-time employees, summarized Dietmannsberger.

Many projects for 2024

The fact that there will be enough to do in the future is due to the numerous projects that the Schliersee fire department has undertaken.

Construction on the new fire station in Neuhaus is scheduled to begin in 2024.

The commander announced that tenders for the new all-wheel-drive crew transport vehicle for operations at Spitzingsee were unfortunately behind schedule due to a change at the manufacturer.

Meanwhile, the shortage of skilled workers and only a few companies specializing in pile dwellings would delay the already approved construction of the new boat hut on Schliersee.

Because the manufacturing companies will stop supplying spare parts for two fire engines in Schliersee and Neuhaus, two identical new vehicles will have to be ordered promptly - but not an easy undertaking with a delivery time of around three years.
