The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Michael-Ende primary school in Unterschleißheim has taken place: after a long history, the new building should be completed quickly.

Unterschleißheim – The first graders stand on the construction site wrapped up in hats and scarves.

They sing a snappy song with corresponding gestures about being colorful and about the fact that all people are different and yet everyone is special.

Yesterday two of the children actively helped with the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Michael Ende School.

The five-class elementary school with a double gymnasium is planned for 500 students.

The music school will also move into the reinforced concrete building with a clinker brick facade and wood-aluminum windows in autumn 2026.

The project is expected to cost 74.1 million euros.

– Plans have been going on for a long time at the largest primary school in Unterschleißheim.

“The prehistory is a novel,” said Mayor Christoph Böck, who wore the carnival order of the Unterschleissheim carnival club yesterday instead of his chain of office, because he was obliged to do so as long as carnival reigns.

With humor and subtle self-irony, he moved on from the school's namesake, Michael Ende, to the “Neverending Story” of planning.

First thoughts as early as 2010

The city council made its first considerations in 2010 with the energy-efficient renovation of the existing school.

In 2013 the topic of full-day classes came up.

In 2016 the decision was made to build a completely new building.

Then the forecast showed that 20 classes were needed instead of 16.

“And then we got really creative,” said Böck.

The city council wanted to build an additional six apartments.

In the meantime, the music society should also move in alongside the music school.

Finally the pandemic came and the city had to save money.

After many discussions, the focus was again on the users, “on the children,” said architect Kristine Waechter from BGS Architekten.

The old gymnasium has now been demolished and excavation has begun.

The tree felling sparked protests, particularly from the Greens and the Federal Nature Conservation Union.

After all: an old linden tree lives on.

It was transplanted from the old schoolyard to Meschendörfer Weg.

“Hurry up”

“The never-ending story now finally has an official beginning,” said Böck in front of around 80 guests: “I am sure that the new building will be good.

Things are moving forward with great strides.” Rector Elke Fannasch is looking forward to the new building: “Hurry up,” she encouraged: “We want to move soon.

We already have 18 classes and no room left.

We’re bursting at the seams.”

What is special about the new school is its construction in five clusters.

Four classes are grouped around a place to learn and stay, so the cooperative all-day model can be optimally implemented.

There are team and smaller group rooms with cozy corners.

The children will be in the house for up to ten hours, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. - the school should be a place of well-being.

There will be twelve practice rooms and two audition rooms for the music school, as well as administration rooms.

The children can observe the work from their classrooms and will move into the new building as fourth graders in three years with lots of music.
