Summoned to school to talk about his twelve-year-old son's academic conduct, a thirty-four-year-old attacked a teacher, coordinator of the boy's class, grabbing him by the neck and slamming him against the wall.

The latest episode, in chronological order, of aggression against school staff occurred today in Reggio Calabria, inside an elementary and middle school.

For this reason, the Minister of Education

Giuseppe Valditara

, who is implementing a plurality of actions with the government and Parliament to combat violence against school staff, in addition to the tightening of penalties, wants to introduce "a further, specific compensatory sanction, which we are developing together with Minister Nordio, for the reputational damage that schools receive from the aggression of their school directors, their teachers or staff in general".

Because "it is evident - he explained during question time - that whoever attacks a school employee attacks the State, profoundly undermining the credibility and authority of the institution".

Since last year there has been an

increase in aggression perpetrated by parents

, equal to 111%, and a slight decrease in those by students.

With a bill, currently being examined by the Senate, we therefore want to give greater weight to voting on conduct.

At the same time, the provision wants to rethink the institution of suspension, "which cannot lead to the paradox of further distancing the student from the school community, but which must instead constitute an opportunity for awareness of the value of the sanction, to be experienced within the school or through solidarity citizenship activities", said the minister, for whom it is also necessary that another proposal, already approved at first reading by the Chamber, which increases the penalties for those who attack teachers or school staff.

Added to all this is a circular from the Ministry of Education to schools which concerns the phenomenon of occupations: "actions carried out by a minority of students which compress the right to study of a larger majority and which in many cases prevent essential services for the administration, not even allowing entry to administrative staff", said Valditara again, who in the circular reminds school managers of the need to charge the students responsible for the costs of damage, cleaning and, more generally, for the restoration of the areas dedicated to teaching.

Meanwhile, the conditions of the student stabbed yesterday by an 18-year-old acquaintance of his as he left a school in Pieve Emanuele, in the Milan area, are improving.

The 16-year-old could in fact be discharged shortly while the 18-year-old will be questioned tomorrow by the Milan investigating judge: for the young man, the prosecutor on duty has asked for the validation of the arrest and precautionary custody in prison for injuries aggravated by the use of a weapon, threats serious and carrying a knife.
