In Paris, parking for visitors' heavy vehicles will become more expensive - this has been the result of a referendum.

Several Brandenburg cities are taking a position on this.

Cottbus - Brandenburg cities want to avoid making parking more expensive for heavy cars for various reasons - unlike in Paris.

A survey of several cities found that there are currently no plans similar to those in France's capital.

The cities have different reasons.

“There are currently no such plans,” said Cottbus city spokesman Jan Gloßmann.

“We are continually looking at the level of parking fees, but there are no considerations in this direction.” He referred to the question of equal treatment.

Paris also decided to increase parking fees for visitors, not for residents.

It is similar in the state capital Potsdam.

“We are of course already looking at what concepts other municipalities in Europe are implementing to deal with the limited space in inner cities,” said city spokesman Markus Klier.

“But there are currently no plans for higher parking fees for SUVs in the state capital.”

Potsdam as an SUV stronghold - let the air out of the tires

There have been an increasing number of cases in Potsdam where air was let out of SUVs.

The Potsdam public prosecutor referred to several investigations.

“There are several acts and we have several procedures for them,” said spokeswoman Theresia Jonitz.

She did not give any details or locations, citing ongoing proceedings.

The magazine “Der Spiegel” reported that the Tire Extinguishers group is releasing air from SUV tires to promote climate protection, with Potsdam being a focus.

According to a list from the comparison portal Check24, Potsdam was the SUV stronghold nationwide in 2022 with a share of 17.3 percent - the portal is based on all vehicle insurance policies taken out via Check24 in 2022.

There are currently no plans similar to those in Paris in Brandenburg an der Havel, as spokesman Thomas Messerschmidt said.

Frankfurt (Oder) also sees no acute need for regulation.

External SUVs do not pose a significant burden on public parking areas compared to other vehicles, the press office said.

This question must also be examined in the course of a revision of the parking fee regulations in connection with other issues, such as the treatment of electric vehicles.

Paris wants to make parking more expensive for SUVs

At a referendum in Paris on Sunday, a majority approved the city's plan to triple parking rates for heavy cars.

From September onwards, one hour of parking in the center for heavy SUVs and other weighty vehicles will cost 18 euros for one hour, and 225 euros for six hours.

Only visitors should pay the special tariff for heavy vehicles in Paris.

Residents should be excluded, as should tradesmen and care services.

The tariff should apply to combustion engine and hybrid models weighing 1.6 tons or more and electric models weighing two tons or more.
