The floor of the pedestrian bridge between the north school center and the sports center in Poing will in future be made of oak.

The larch planks need to be replaced.

The building committee rejects tropical wood.

Poing – Oak is used to renovate the floor covering of the walking and cycling bridge at the Poinger sports center.

The construction and environmental committee of the Poing local council recently decided this at its meeting.

And decided against the cheaper option, the tropical Bongossi hardwood.

According to the administration, the material price here is around 1,800 euros per cubic meter, oak costs around 1,900 euros.

After the meeting, Miriam Benthaus, chairwoman of the Poinger local group of the Federation for Nature Conservation, said with relief: “It’s good that the decision was made that way.” Tropical wood would not have been acceptable.

Poing: Oak is the expensive option

The Seitz (Landshut) engineering firm commissioned by the municipality presented the plans for the renovation at the last meeting of the building and environmental committee in 2023 and suggested Bongossi for this purpose.

Because this hardwood is very robust.

In contrast to the larch planks that have formed the floor of the bridge that leads over Plieninger Straße since 2009.

However, these must be replaced occasionally and regularly due to signs of wear and weathering.

Another disadvantage of larch wood is that the milled profiles wear out relatively quickly and the surface becomes very slippery when wet.

Poing Building Committee: A clear no to tropical wood

At the December meeting, some committee members asked about alternatives to tropical wood - a decision was therefore postponed.

The administration and the engineering office have now submitted and presented information on alternative coverings.

In addition to oak as hardwood, Walaba reservoir wood and Iroko (Kembala).

But both are much more expensive than Bongossi.

And with all three of these tropical woods there is the problem of long and environmentally damaging transport routes, as committee members Valentin Mágori (FWG) and Peter Maier (SPD), among others, criticized.

The question of whether and how tropical wood is certified and which wood is on a red list of endangered wood was also discussed.

There were different and sometimes contradictory statements and interpretations from the engineering office and committee members.

LED strip light on the railing

Because, according to engineer Erich Seitz, glass fiber reinforced plastic and grating are rather unsuitable as floor coverings and fail, the committee members quickly agreed on oak.

Even though, according to the administration, this is about twice as expensive in the long term compared to Bongossi - also in terms of durability (oak ten years and therefore less than half compared to Bongossi hardwood).

For the replacement of the planks on the bridge, the committee would like to state in the tender that the oak wood is certified and comes from Germany or surrounding countries.

In this context, Erich Seitz noted that oak is also an endangered wood.

There was far less discussion when it came to the question of what lighting the pedestrian and cyclist bridge should have.

The committee decided on a white strip of light that would be attached to the railing.

With insect-friendly LED lighting, as Mayor Thomas Stark explained.
