Carnival compact from February 7th:

On Thursday the time has finally come: the street carnival in Cologne starts with Weiberfastnacht.

However, if you want to shop at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. on the carnival days, you should find out about the changed opening times of the supermarkets beforehand.

Some shops are even completely closed on Weiberfastnacht and Shrove Monday.

Weiberfastnacht and Rose Monday – Cologne becomes a party zone at Carnival

  • This is important on Weiberfastnacht:

The street carnival begins at 11:11 a.m.

It is officially opened on the Alter Markt by the people of the Old Town.

But there is also partying and swaying in the pubs, clubs and on the streets.

  • This is important on Carnival Friday:

Countless meetings, parties and other carnival formats take place on Carnival Friday - both by the carnival companies and in pubs and clubs.

  • This is important on Carnival Saturday:

On Carnival Saturday, the Rote Funeken's spark bivouac takes place on Neumarkt.

The first Veedel parades also start.

  • This is important on Carnival Sunday:

The school and Veedels parades will also traditionally take place on Carnival Sunday in 2024.

There are also countless parties and celebrations all over Cologne.

  • This is important on Shrove Monday:

Cologne gets crowded, especially on Shrove Monday.

Because that's when the Cologne Rose Monday procession takes place - with over 1.5 million visitors in Cologne.

Numerous people also watch the Rose Monday procession on TV.

  • This is important on Violet Tuesday:

A real highlight here is the Nubbel burning, which takes place on every Cologne corner.

There are also a number of Veedels parades in Cologne on Violet Tuesday.

Interior Minister Reul announces a “massive police presence”.

Carnival compact from February 6th:

After the terrorist threats against Cologne Cathedral on New Year's Eve, police in North Rhine-Westphalia are preparing for the street carnival.

And celebrants could also notice this from Women's Carnival onwards due to a significantly increased number of emergency services.

Because NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul has announced a “massive police presence” in the celebration zones at Carnival due to the continued increased risk of terrorism.

“We will deploy a total of around 62,000 police forces on the days of the carnival in the country - normally there would be around 38,000 during this period,” said the CDU politician to the

He advised carnival participants to report suspicious people to the police.

At the same time, Reul also appeals to celebrate carnival.

There will be an emergency care center for drunks in Cologne

Carnival compact from February 6th:

Kölsch is likely to be flowing in masses in Cologne again, especially on Women's Carnival.

If you look too deeply into the glass, you may need medical attention.

The city of Cologne and the fire department have come up with something special for the medical care of drunken carnival revelers this year: a so-called emergency care center.

This will open on Weiberfastnacht and on Shrove Monday at the Humboldtstrasse vocational college (entrance: Eiergraben 101).

“Medical staff look after alcoholic, stable patients and monitor them medically until they can go home independently or accompanied,” says the city of Cologne.

The aim of this emergency center is primarily to relieve the burden on the surrounding hospitals on emergency days.

Carnival compact from February 6th:

There are only a few days left until Weiberfastnacht - but a weather forecast now gives little hope: Carnival celebrations could literally fall apart.

“Continuous rain of varying intensity occurs.

Rainfall amounts of between 45 l/m² and 60 l/m² are expected,” warns the DWD for Weiberfastnacht until Friday morning in Cologne.

The warning is already active from Wednesday night (February 7th).

Carnival fair is canceled: “Currently cannot be planned”

Carnival compact from February 6th:

The carnival countdown is running.

In a few days it will be women's carnival.

But Jecke will have to forego a popular tradition this year.

Because the carnival fair on Neumarkt is canceled this year.

The Cologne carnival fair actually traditionally begins on Carnival Saturday - directly after the Red Funken bivouac.

But things are different this year, as the Cologne showmen's community reports.

“Due to new security precautions and a new lockdown concept for the Red Sparks bivouac, it is currently not possible to plan when the construction or start of the carnival fair could begin,” said the GKS.

It is hoped that the carnival will celebrate a comeback next year, they say.

After the KoTropfen incident – carnival band draws conclusions

Carnival compact from February 6th:

The band Eldorado is shocked: “At a very traditional carnival party,” as singer Manuel Sauer says, his girlfriend was given knockout drops.

Although she is doing well, “according to the circumstances, she is fine,” says Manuel - but the singer, who is still visibly shaken in the video, also explicitly points out the dangers that can come from knockout drops.

“What really shocks me is that we're getting a lot of news that this is not an isolated case at Fastelovend and seems to be becoming more and more fashionable.” The band is therefore drawing conclusions.

Police before carnival in Cologne – “take aggressors out of traffic early”

Carnival compact from February 5th:

The Cologne police are also preparing for the carnival days - and in this context once again reminds the celebrants of the prevention campaign “It's a dress, not a yes”.

“Precisely because when alcoholism increases, inhibitions often fall and people are sexually harassed, we started the campaign, which is currently very popular, particularly on social media.

Anyone who comes to Cologne should know that the celebrants are sensitized and that the police will intervene early in the event of harassment,” explains operations manager Martin Lotz.

At the opening of the carnival session there are often many operations for the police and public order offices.

“Everyone should have fun and get home safely.

This year we are again preparing for an alcohol-related increase in aggression on Thursday afternoons.

“We will remove those who prevent others from celebrating peacefully,” it added.

In addition, people who will be traveling in motor vehicles must expect increased alcohol controls.

“This particularly applies to those who get around cities with an e-scooter,” it continues.

Carnival compact from February 5th:

Together with the ensemble of the play “Himmel und Kölle”, Höhner legend Henning Krautmacher is making an important appeal to the Jecken just in time for the start of the street carnival.

The police have launched the “It's a dress, not a yes” campaign, which is intended to protect (young) women from stupid sayings, grabbing, being hit on or more during Fastelovend.

The long-time Höhner frontman is of course happy to join in with this appeal.

“We are taking part in an action by the Cologne police, which translated into Cologne means something like: Costuming does not mean seduction, and certainly does not mean touching,” said the singer.

The countdown is on: preparations for the Cologne Carnival are already underway throughout the city.

The first diversions for women's carnival were set up.

And for the Rose Monday procession, the carnival information signs have already been set up along the route.

But there is also a great program in Cologne on Carnival Sunday.

Because then the Schull- and Veedelszöch 2024 will take place with the unusual, colorful and self-made costumes of the groups and the often (socially) critical topics and group mottos.

Women’s Carnival 2024 in Cologne – the whole city becomes a party mile

Carnival compact from February 4th:

Cologne and the Rhineland have been rocking like crazy for weeks and months.

But with Weiberfastnacht on Thursday (February 8th) the crazy hustle and bustle reaches a new peak.

There are celebrations and parties all day long in the pubs and bars in Cologne.

Rose Monday procession 2024 in Cologne only on the left bank of the Rhine - carriage motifs partially revealed

Carnival compact from February 3rd:

On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Cologne Carnival, the Rose Monday parade took place on the right bank of the Rhine for the first time in 2023.

But this year everything is going back to normal.

The fun parade runs on February 12th from Severinstrasse across the Cologne city center district to Mohrenstrasse.

As usual, current topics from politics, sport and business, but also society and city life are parodied on some of the floats.

The festival committee has already published the first satires for the Rose Monday procession 2024.

Everything else carnivalists need to know can be found in an overview of the 2024 Rose Monday parade in Cologne.

Carnival compact from February 3rd:

Carnival has long been an issue again in politics.

NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) caused enthusiasm with an ironic costume at a carnival meeting in Cologne's Gürzenich festival hall.

Wüst appeared on Friday evening (February 2nd) dressed as the self-proclaimed “Insta President” with a large Instagram frame.

The Prime Minister came up with the idea after the opposition in the state parliament criticized his high social media presence.

“I wasn't elected Insta President, but I was, in a sense, appointed by the SPD - and I was so happy about this title that my costume for this year became clear very quickly,” explained Wüst.

Costume trends for the 2024 Carnival in Cologne – and costumes that could result in penalties

Carnival compact from February 2nd:

The be-all and end-all of Cologne Carnival is of course the right costume.

And there are a few things to keep in mind - certain costumes are problematic at Carnival.

There is a risk of a fine of up to 10,000 euros.

24RHEIN has an overview of five costume ideas that can be implemented quickly and cheaply.

Cologne Carnival 2024 without chaos?

Security concept and KVB changes in Cologne

Carnival compact from February 2nd:

The countdown is on: In a few days it will be Weiberfastnacht - and the city will be in party mode.

The first preparations are already underway in Cologne.

Individual diversions and initial closures are being prepared.

The basis for this is the new security concept for Carnival 2024. And there are two big changes this year, which is intended to prevent chaos due to too many celebrants.

Cologne Carnival 2024: That's why the 2024 session is particularly short

Carnival compact from February 2nd:

This year the session is particularly short.

In 2024, Women's Carnival falls on Thursday, February 8th.

This means that Rose Monday falls on February 12th.

This means that Ash Wednesday falls on February 14th and the session is already over in mid-February.

This is because Carnival is based on Easter.

There must always be exactly 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday - this is how long Lent lasts in Christianity.

Easter is again based on the first full moon of spring - and that is quite early this year.

The session motto and the triumvirate in the Cologne Carnival 2024

Carnival compact from February 2nd:

The session motto for 2024 is “Wat e Theater – Wat e Jeckespill”.

“Whether on the big world stage or in the heated atmosphere of social media: a little more Cologne calm would do people good,” explains Christoph Kuckelkorn, President of the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee.

By the way: There will also be a matching motto scarf for the Cologne Carnival 2024.

The biggest and most important question for a long time: Who will be the Cologne triumvirate in 2024?

In mid-August, the Cologne triumvirate was officially presented in 2024 - and comes from one family.

Since the session opened on November 11th.

Prince Sascha I, farmer Werner and Jungfrau Frieda from the Klupsch family and from the company KG Treuer Husar Blau-Gelb from 1925 eV rule. The prince is the son of the virgin and nephew of the farmer.
