Carnival compact from February 7th:
On Thursday the time has finally come: the street carnival in Cologne starts with Weiberfastnacht.
However, if you want to shop at Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. on the carnival days, you should find out about the changed opening times of the supermarkets beforehand.
Some shops are even completely closed on Weiberfastnacht and Shrove Monday.
Weiberfastnacht and Rose Monday – Cologne becomes a party zone at Carnival
This is important on Weiberfastnacht:
The street carnival begins at 11:11 a.m.
It is officially opened on the Alter Markt by the people of the Old Town.
But there is also partying and swaying in the pubs, clubs and on the streets.

Countless meetings, parties and other carnival formats take place on Carnival Friday - both by the carnival companies and in pubs and clubs.

After the terrorist threats against Cologne Cathedral on New Year's Eve, police in North Rhine-Westphalia are preparing for the street carnival.
And celebrants could also notice this from Women's Carnival onwards due to a significantly increased number of emergency services.
Because NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul has announced a “massive police presence” in the celebration zones at Carnival due to the continued increased risk of terrorism.
“We will deploy a total of around 62,000 police forces on the days of the carnival in the country - normally there would be around 38,000 during this period,” said the CDU politician to the

According to Reul, “the risk of attacks has rarely been as high as it is today.”
“This is due to the international situation with the wars in Israel and Ukraine,” he told the
KStA
.
He advised carnival participants to report suspicious people to the police.
At the same time, Reul also appeals to celebrate carnival.
“It’s part of our culture and we shouldn’t allow it to be ruined.” Still, there’s no harm in being vigilant.
There will be an emergency care center for drunks in Cologne

Kölsch is likely to be flowing in masses in Cologne again, especially on Women's Carnival.
If you look too deeply into the glass, you may need medical attention.
The city of Cologne and the fire department have come up with something special for the medical care of drunken carnival revelers this year: a so-called emergency care center.
This will open on Weiberfastnacht and on Shrove Monday at the Humboldtstrasse vocational college (entrance: Eiergraben 101).
“Medical staff look after alcoholic, stable patients and monitor them medically until they can go home independently or accompanied,” says the city of Cologne.
The aim of this emergency center is primarily to relieve the burden on the surrounding hospitals on emergency days.

There are only a few days left until Weiberfastnacht - but a weather forecast now gives little hope: Carnival celebrations could literally fall apart.
“Continuous rain of varying intensity occurs.
Rainfall amounts of between 45 l/m² and 60 l/m² are expected,” warns the DWD for Weiberfastnacht until Friday morning in Cologne.
The warning is already active from Wednesday night (February 7th).
Carnival fair is canceled: “Currently cannot be planned”

In a few days it will be women's carnival.
But Jecke will have to forego a popular tradition this year.
Because the carnival fair on Neumarkt is canceled this year.
The Cologne carnival fair actually traditionally begins on Carnival Saturday - directly after the Red Funken bivouac.
But things are different this year, as the Cologne showmen's community reports.
“Due to new security precautions and a new lockdown concept for the Red Sparks bivouac, it is currently not possible to plan when the construction or start of the carnival fair could begin,” said the GKS.
It is hoped that the carnival will celebrate a comeback next year, they say.

Together with the ensemble of the play “Himmel und Kölle”, Höhner legend Henning Krautmacher is making an important appeal to the Jecken just in time for the start of the street carnival.
The police have launched the “It's a dress, not a yes” campaign, which is intended to protect (young) women from stupid sayings, grabbing, being hit on or more during Fastelovend.
The long-time Höhner frontman is of course happy to join in with this appeal.
“We are taking part in an action by the Cologne police, which translated into Cologne means something like: Costuming does not mean seduction, and certainly does not mean touching,” said the singer.

Carnival has long been an issue again in politics.
NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) caused enthusiasm with an ironic costume at a carnival meeting in Cologne's Gürzenich festival hall.
Wüst appeared on Friday evening (February 2nd) dressed as the self-proclaimed “Insta President” with a large Instagram frame.
The Prime Minister came up with the idea after the opposition in the state parliament criticized his high social media presence.
“I wasn't elected Insta President, but I was, in a sense, appointed by the SPD - and I was so happy about this title that my costume for this year became clear very quickly,” explained Wüst.

This is because Carnival is based on Easter.
There must always be exactly 46 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday - this is how long Lent lasts in Christianity.

The session motto and the triumvirate in the Cologne Carnival 2024
Carnival compact from February 2nd:
The session motto for 2024 is “Wat e Theater – Wat e Jeckespill”.
“Whether on the big world stage or in the heated atmosphere of social media: a little more Cologne calm would do people good,” explains Christoph Kuckelkorn, President of the Cologne Carnival Festival Committee.
By the way: There will also be a matching motto scarf for the Cologne Carnival 2024.
The biggest and most important question for a long time: Who will be the Cologne triumvirate in 2024?
In mid-August, the Cologne triumvirate was officially presented in 2024 - and comes from one family.
Since the session opened on November 11th.
Prince Sascha I, farmer Werner and Jungfrau Frieda from the Klupsch family and from the company KG Treuer Husar Blau-Gelb from 1925 eV rule. The prince is the son of the virgin and nephew of the farmer.
