A real tragedy is currently taking place on a street in the Black Forest.

Hundreds of small birds are run over there in winter.

The worst: it can hardly be prevented.

Black Forest - There are dramatic scenes that take place on a street in Baden-Württemberg.

Small birds often land in the middle of the Black Forest High Road.

Approaching cars often only notice them when it is too late.

This has happened to many hundreds of the little birdies.

The local crossbills are called “parrots of the Black Forest” because of their pretty, colorful plumage.

But what captures the attention of the poor animals so much that they judge the danger so poorly?

The reason for the mass extinction of birds is man-made

Not surprisingly, people are to blame for the situation.

Because there is a clear reason why the little birds just stay sitting on the road even though cars are rolling along.

If the road freezes over in winter, road salt is used there.

This is forbidden for private individuals in many areas.

The mineral-rich snack is obviously a real treat for the small finch species.

They eagerly pick the salt from the road - and forget everything around them.

With fatal consequences.

For this reason, the Black Forest National Park has issued a message calling on drivers on the road to be more careful.

“At low speeds, the animals have the best chance of flying away in time,” explains bird expert Esther del Val Alfaro.

She also believes that the number of unreported cases of dead animals is likely to be significantly higher.

The Black Forest parrots are the only birds that breed in the region during the winter months.

If the parents die while searching for food, the entire offspring also dies.
