Despite increased costs, German vacationers did not want to forego their time off in 2023.
On average, a person spent over 1,500 euros on their trip.
Due to high inflation and loss of profits during the Corona crisis, vacations have become very expensive in recent years.
But that doesn't stop Germans from booking a trip anyway.
In return, they are happy to accept the high costs, as the current tourism analysis by the
BAT Foundation for Future Questions
reveals.
It is based on a survey of 3,000 people aged 18 and over from Germany about their travel behavior in 2023.
New record: Over 1,500 euros per person for a vacation
Last year, a person spent an average of 1,538 euros on their main vacation - that's a new record level, as the
Foundation for Future Questions
writes.
In 2022 it was still 1,357 euros.
This also means that a family of four paid more than 6,000 euros for a trip in 2023.
Holidaymakers paid the most for a break in Greece (1,755 euros) and Spain (1,663 euros).

Daily holiday spending has also reached a new high: Germans paid an average of 129 euros, which is 19 percent more than in the previous season.
The most expensive travel destination was also Greece with a cost of 160 euros per day.
However, the biggest price increase compared to the previous year was in Spain with 35 percent (126 euros), Austria with 29 percent (133 euros) and long-haul destinations with 27 percent (142 euros).
Holidays in Germany have also become more expensive by 20 euros to 132 euros per day, even though the travel costs are lower.
In Scandinavia, costs have remained relatively stable with a price increase of two percent.

The high spending on vacations last year shows that Germans are willing to spend some money on wonderful vacation experiences, as Prof. Ulrich Reinhardt, scientific director of the BAT Foundation for Future Issues, says: “At the same time, they are also doing it “The effects of inflation and high demand have been noticeable, which have led to higher prices.”

Even in 2024, Germans won't be complacent when it comes to booking their vacation
And the trend could continue in 2024.
Travel providers are noticing that Germans are increasingly booking more sophisticated offers: “The suites or sea view rooms are always the first to be fully booked, the guests simply want more.
With all the crises, vacation has become such an important time that everyone wants to make sure that they really have a good vacation," says Tui spokesman Aage Dünhaupt, according to a report by
Tagesschau
.
The travel provider Dertour recognizes a similar pattern - last summer, 80 percent of guests chose a four- or five-star hotel.
Product manager Sven Schikarsky is of the opinion that this phenomenon will continue this summer: “The need for high-quality holidays with extra service, comfort and enjoyment will continue to grow in 2024.”
