The police continue to investigate the arson.

Days after the burning of the statue, Mohammed Zeid, a 34-year-old street resident, was arrested on suspicion of setting it on fire.

He underwent a psychiatric examination, but later the court ordered his release from custody.

In his decision to release Zeid, Judge Hirshel Doron criticized the police for the continuation of the investigation, and claimed that they are requesting the extension of Zeid's detention in view of the media attention the case received: "In light of my understanding that the investigative unit is not using the days of detention to effectively advance the investigation, it is appropriate to order his release of the suspect".

In addition, the judge claimed that he had difficulty seeing from the investigation materials how the reasonable suspicion grew stronger from the day of the suspect's arrest, and that evidentiary difficulty was evident regarding the identification of the suspect in the act.
