Electricity prices are currently at a high level.

From April 1st, some providers will increase them additionally.

Munich – Many households will have to prepare for higher electricity prices from April 1st.

The reason for this is, among other things, that the two large energy companies EnBW based in Karlsruhe and EWE from Oldenburg are raising their prices, as shown by a calculation by the comparison portal Verivox.

Accordingly, EnBW customers will have to dig into their pockets significantly more than before due to an electricity price increase of 15.9 percent from April this year.

“For a model household with an annual consumption of 2,900 kilowatt hours (kWh), this means additional costs of around 16 euros per month,” said a press release from the group, which

SWR

reported on yesterday.

The Oldenburg provider EWE will also raise electricity prices significantly on April 1st, as

NDR

reported today.

The group cites increased network fees and the surcharge for electricity-intensive businesses as reasons for this.

According to EWE, the electricity price increase will affect 210,000 electricity and 105,000 gas consumers.

Calculated over the year, this means 62 euros more for households with a sample consumption of 2,800 kilowatt hours.

For gas recipients with an annual consumption of 17,500 kilowatt hours, the price increase is 455 euros more significant.

Other regional energy suppliers are increasing their prices – others are remaining stable

In addition to the two large energy companies EnBW and EWE, several other regional energy companies are also increasing their electricity prices.

In March 2024, 82 electricity price increases were announced by regional suppliers nationwide, averaging around 6 percent, as the

Bild

newspaper reported today, citing the comparison portal Verivox

reported.

For a three-person household with an annual consumption of, for example, 4000 kWh, this corresponds to an additional burden of around 94 euros per year.

However, there are also enough energy suppliers who want to keep their prices at a constant level despite the thankless current market situation.

This includes the Hanover energy company Enercity, which, according to

NDR

, recently announced that it did not want to pass on increased network fees to customers.

But the nationwide provider E.ON Energie Deutschland also does not want to increase the price of electricity.

At least at this point in time.

However, according to NDR

, the company is

not ruling out a later price increase.

In addition to the 82 increases from regional providers, 13 suppliers have announced electricity price reductions of around 10 percent, which corresponds to around 221 euros.

These include, among others, the Dortmund supplier DEW21, which wants to lower its prices for basic services on March 1st, and the Frankfurt am Main-based Eon subsidiary Süwag.

She plans to reduce the price on May 1st this year.

German electricity prices in 2024 at a high level.

What they are made up of

Electricity prices in Germany have been consistently high for a long time.

According to Verivox, the number has almost doubled in the last 15 years.

According to the price index of the comparison portal, the price per kilowatt hour at the beginning of 2024 is on average 38 cents.

The basic fee is already included in this work price.

A private household with an average electricity consumption of 4,000 kWh currently has to pay around 1,500 euros per year for electricity.

At the beginning of this year, taxes, levies and levies accounted for a total of around 29.5 percent of the electricity price.

This includes electricity tax, concession fees to the municipalities and the taxes resulting from the Combined Heat and Power Act (KWKG), the §19 NEV levy, the offshore network levy and VAT.

The traffic light coalition had to revise plans for subsidies - this caused network fees to rise

The traffic light coalition had originally planned to subsidize network fees with a total of 5.5 billion euros.

But because of the deficit in the federal budget, the federal government decided in December to cancel the planned subsidies without replacement.

As a result, the major network operators more than doubled their network fees - from 3.1 to 6.4 cents per kilowatt hour.

In some federal states, electricity prices have recently risen by around a third, as the comparison portal Check24 reported in January.

As a result, electricity prices in Thuringia rose by 33 percent.

In Bavaria, costs must be expected to be 32 percent higher.

And in North Rhine-Westphalia there are also 31 percent additional costs.

The state of Brandenburg, for example, is doing better, where network usage fees are only two percent more expensive.

The situation is similar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - there network fees are rising by 4 percent.

“Consumers will have to pay significantly more for electricity this year than last year.

The political decisions have a direct impact on the wallets of energy customers,” says Steffen Suttner, Managing Director of Energy at Check24.

If you want to minimize price increases, the expert advises you to take action yourself and change provider if necessary.

“This is the only way consumers can cushion the enormous additional costs.”
