The “Eco Party” is on a growth path.

The Green party leadership sees a connection with the nationwide protests against right-wing extremism.

Berlin – According to their own statements, the Greens have gained over 4,500 new members since the beginning of the year.

A rare addition for the party, which is primarily committed to climate policy.

The party leadership sees the reason for the increase in the protests against right-wing extremism in the country that have been going on for weeks.

“This weekend, hundreds of thousands of people were again on the streets across Germany to take a stand against right-wing extremism and for our democracy,” said the party’s political director, Emily Büning, to the

German Press Agency (dpa).

The Greens are gaining members: Correctiv research could be partly responsible

In the fight against right-wing pressure, many want to make a statement by joining the party.

“Since the beginning of January alone, over 4,500 people have decided to become members of the Greens – that is the second strongest monthly growth our party has ever experienced,” said Büning.

According to the party, there has only been an even larger wave of entry since the Greens were founded in 1980, in 2021 in the run-up to the federal election.

According to its own information, the party had around 126,500 members in 2022.

The nationwide wave of protests that has been going on for weeks was triggered by research by the

media company Correctiv

into a meeting between radical right-wingers and individual politicians from the AfD, CDU and Values Union in Potsdam in November.

There, the former head of the right-wing extremist Identitarian Movement in Austria, Martin Sellner, said he spoke about the concept of so-called remigration.

When right-wing extremists use the term, they usually mean that large numbers of people of foreign origin should leave the country - even under duress.

Secret meeting with consequences: CDU initiates exclusion procedures

The right-wing fantasies about a mass expulsion of people continue to preoccupy society and politics weeks after publication.

Last weekend around half a million people demonstrated against the right.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior spoke of almost 480,000 people at 133 events in Berlin on Monday afternoon.

A ministry spokesman referred to information from the police authorities from all 16 federal states.

Further demonstrations are also planned for next week.

While the consequences of the

Correctiv research

could mean an increase in membership for the Greens, parties such as the CDU and AfD are losing members.

Only at the beginning of this week did the CDU announce exclusion proceedings against the owner of the Potsdam villa where the secret meeting took place in November.

According to media reports, the owner is CDU member Wilhelm Wilderink.

An expulsion process is the sharpest sword against party members.

This is currently being prepared.

The winners are the opposite poles of the AfD: the left is also gaining members

The winners of the increasing protests against right-wing pressure in Germany are the opposite poles of the AfD such as the Green Party.

According to member studies on voter migration from recent years, the Greens overall are losing fewer supporters to the AfD than other parties.

In surveys, the Greens recently achieved figures between 13 and 14 percent nationwide.

The Left is also anticipating a strong increase, even if the party was only able to provide information on online applications because these were recorded on a daily basis.

The comparison of written entries and exits takes longer.

484 people entered via the online form between January 10th and 21st.

In the same period last year there were only 50.
