Hardly a weekend without overcrowded parking lots and congested streets.

In order to be able to better direct the flow of traffic from the greater Munich area in the district, the Oberland regional development department has developed a new system that is intended to direct and better distribute the masses of visitors in real time.

A novelty.

Schliersee - Full parking spaces, clogged streets: day tourism is lucrative for the region, but it has its limits if it permanently puts such a strain on the residents that it only annoys them.

Such overloads occurred during the corona pandemic, and since then discontent in the district has grown in some places.

A new app is now intended to get the problem under control: digital visitor guidance using artificial intelligence (AI).

Or as Harald Gmeiner, board member of the municipal company Regional Development Oberland (REO), describes it: “Reduce traffic and increase the recreational value.”

“Smart Tourism Region”

The project that is supposed to achieve this is called STR and stands for “Smart Tourism Region”.

Gmeiner's tourism team from the Alpine region Tegernsee Schliersee (ATS) had already started the digital real-time platform in February 2020 - before the merger with the location marketing company (SMG) to form the municipal company REO.

Supported by funding of almost 500,000 euros from the Ministry of Tourism, it was possible to have the concept implemented by specialist companies.

The main aim is, on the one hand, to provide the visitor flows with comprehensive real-time information and, as a result, to achieve automated visitor guidance.

Ideally, the guest should inform himself in advance and, if in doubt, choose destinations that are less frequented.

The result would be a lower burden on residents.

“One of the most attractive tourist regions in Bavaria”

Because with 8.2 million day guests and around 750,000 holiday guests with 2.6 million overnight stays annually, the Miesbach district is “one of the most attractive tourism regions in Bavaria,” confirmed Agriculture and Tourism Minister Michaela Kaniber (CSU) at the STR presentation in the Schliersee Local History Museum.

“This wonderful area,” stated state parliament president and constituency member Ilse Aigner (CSU), “is particularly beautiful and a special challenge.” It is ideal for trying out this new technology.

“Applying this here also shows how important the topic is for the district.”

The interpretation of District Administrator Olaf von Löwis (CSU), who described smart as intelligent, did not go far enough for Kaniber: “Smart also means being friendly and not overwhelming.” Of course, you cannot stop people from coming to this beautiful area .

The REO can be even more proud of its project.

“It only works with each other, not against each other.”

The analysis of mobile phone data by the ATS/REO showed that the district is overloaded on around 90 days over the course of the year - especially on nice days during the holidays and on weekends.

The aim now is to provide relief, but this cannot happen overnight.

Huge opportunity with a learning system

The system, which according to STR project manager Christian Greilinger (REO) is new in German-speaking countries, relies on open data exchange in order to get the most comprehensive picture possible.

According to Lutz Heuser, CEO of Munich-based software developer B2M Software GmbH, this is a “huge opportunity”.

The AI-based analyzes also allow forecasts.

“AI is a learning system.

And we are now only in the first half of 1st grade.

The more we learn, the more accurate and better we become.”
