What drives a man to be a member of the local fire department for 80 years?
Maybe Ludwig Heilmaier can provide some answers.
Markt Schwaben
– Seasoned firefighters with 40 or 50 years of membership under their belt or honorary members like Walter Oberhuber, Richard Eckert, Emil Frick or Theo Lemmen were also amazed.
And some even stood up full of respect and admiration when the fire brigade association chairman in Markt Schwaben, Andreas Stolze, presented an award at the annual general meeting in the Stüberl, which has probably never existed in this form in Markt Schwaben and probably far beyond .
The club management honored Ludwig Heilmaier, a member who has been there for exactly 80 years (!), with a certificate of honor.
In 1943 they were given a choice: welfare, medical services or fire brigade
It was 1943, the senior told his attentively listening comrades, when, as a very young man of 16 years, he was, so to speak, assigned to put out fires in Munich after Allied air raids.
Fire brigade, medical service or welfare: those were his options back then.
Heilmaier decided to join the fire service - and immediately took his first assignment in Munich as an opportunity to join the fire department in his birthplace.
At that time their base was still in the old town hall on the market square.
Today only old photographs bear witness to this.
Heilmaier, now 96, was later assigned to military service.
In the 50s and 60s he was particularly active with the Swabian fire brigade.
And he also played an active role as a drummer in the marching band, who was also a host.
Nevertheless, there were also “normal” honors at the general meeting of the fire brigade association.
For about 25 years: Stefanie Ferres, Natalie Frick (in absentia), Christa and Dieter Sander and Christl Stern were honored here.
Assigned to clear in Munich after bombing
Herbert Eberl, Ralf Handschuh, Martin Hörl, Hans Moser, Franz Schiegl and Erich Ulowetz (apologies) have been there for 40 years.
Proud 50 years can be seen: Reinhard Beck, Karl-Heinz Brandl, Paul Frick, Josef Heuwieser, Georg Holley, Reinhold Kraus (apologized), Peter Lederhuber (apologized), Günter Mayr, Wolfgang Scharf, Josef Schmid, Georg Schäftner, Robert Sikecz, Ludwig Steffelbauer and Josef Weindl (apologies).
And Franz Delazer (sorry) and Georg Rentsch can still look back on an impressive 60 years.
In his annual report, Andreas Stolze referred, among other things, to a largely stable number of members of 575 for years - based on the turn of the year 2023/24.
Of these, 475 are passive members and 21 are young people.
Twelve departures were compared to six new arrivals.
Actually, according to Stolze, the anniversary year 2022 was already very eventful and filled with many events.
But 2023 will not be inferior.
The biggest project was the new maypole.
A special highlight was the blue light party.
Initially viewed with skepticism by some, this was, according to the board, a complete success.
The guard hut was no longer sufficient for this, so they moved into the vehicle hall.
According to Stolze, well over 400 visitors were there.
People have already asked when the next party will take place.
There will also be a lot on offer in the new year.

Stable status at the fire department association
It is important to the board to maintain good contacts with the fire department pensioners, as they are respectfully called in the market town.
They meet regularly for regular meetings, but from now on they should also be invited by the club to have a snack in the equipment shed at least once a year.
