The first flights were canceled last night.

Lufthansa employees have now stopped working at five airports nationwide.

Frankfurt – Lufthansa is currently under pressure due to a 27-hour warning strike by its ground staff.

The warning strike was initiated by the Verdi union.

It has called on the 25,000 employees of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Lufthansa Technik, Lufthansa Cargo and other companies to go on a 27-hour warning strike on Wednesday and Thursday.

In total, Lufthansa employees will stop working at five German airports.

As a result, the airline has to cancel up to 90 percent of its scheduled flights.

The warning strike previously announced by the ground staff began on Wednesday night, as

n-tv

reported today.

The start of the warning strike was confirmed in the morning by a spokesman for the Verdi union at Frankfurt Airport.

Along with Munich Airport, this will be the most affected by the warning strike.

Germany's largest airline has already canceled between 80 and 90 percent of its planned flights from German airports for this Wednesday.

In addition to Frankfurt and Munich, the Verdi union has also called on Lufthansa employees at some other airports in the country to stop working for the next 27 hours.

It is estimated that more than 100,000 passengers are affected by the Lufthansa strike.

The first flights were canceled on Tuesday evening.

These are the consequences of the Lufthansa strike for passengers

If flights within Germany are canceled, passengers have the option of redeeming their unused flight tickets for vouchers for alternative journeys with Deutsche Bahn.

Free rebookings are also available via the Lufthansa website, the Lufthansa app and the service center, the airline said.

In addition, Lufthansa has set up a special page for flight irregularities on its website, where passengers can also find information on passenger rights in the event of canceled flights.

Under no circumstances should passengers of canceled flights come to the airport, warned Lufthansa.

“Due to the strike, the rebooking counters are unfortunately not staffed,” the airline reported on its website.

According to the airline, passengers affected by flight cancellations as a result of the Verdi strike were informed of the flight cancellations as a result of the Verdi strike by email or via the Lufthansa app.

Restrictions are likely to be expected on Thursday due to the Lufthansa strike

On the other hand, passengers from Lufthansa's subsidiaries Eurowings and other external airlines are not or only barely affected by the warning strike.

For example, the direct flight subsidiary Eurowings plans to continue to operate its entire flight program despite the 27-hour Lufthansa warning strike.

At the Munich and Frankfurt hubs, remaining employees should give priority to flights from Lufthansa's foreign sister airlines Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines in order to maintain their networks.

Lufthansa customers could then also be rebooked on these flights in order to get to their destination airports despite the strike.

Strikers in Berlin and Frankfurt have called for meetings this Wednesday.

The warning strike, which lasted over 27 hours, is scheduled to end on Thursday around 7:10 a.m.

According to Lufthansa, restrictions on regular passenger handling operations will likely continue on Thursday for the first day after the end of the strike.

By Friday, however, operations should have completely returned to normal.

These airports are currently the most affected nationwide by the Lufthansa strike

According to n-tv information, 80 to 90 percent of the 400 planned Lufthansa flights in Munich are canceled.

In Nuremberg, however, only eight flights to and from Frankfurt were canceled as a result of the Lufthansa warning strike.

At Germany's largest airport in Frankfurt, however, around 80 to 90 percent of the approximately 600 planned flights of the Lufthansa core brand and the group's own feeder Air Dolomiti were canceled.

Other airlines, however, have started flight operations as usual.

At Berlin-Schönefeld Airport, all 46 of today's Lufthansa flights have been canceled.

The original plan was to have 23 take-offs and landings at the capital's airport, BER.

Flights from other airlines have already landed and taken off as usual, according to the Berlin Airport website.

This also applies to the flights of the Lufthansa subsidiaries Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Swiss.

What is the current wage dispute between Verdi and Lufthansa about?

In the ongoing collective bargaining dispute between Verdi and Lufthansa, the Verdi union is demanding 12.5 percent more salaries for employees, but at least 500 euros per month over a period of twelve months.

In addition, there should be a group-wide uniform inflation compensation bonus for Lufthansa employees - it should amount to 3,000 euros.

Both parties to the collective bargaining dispute have scheduled the next round of negotiations for February 12th in Frankfurt am Main.

In its argument, Lufthansa points to past wage increases for its employees and has already offered them 13 percent more salary and an inflation compensation bonus for a period of three years.

In Verdi's opinion, Lufthansa's offer to its employees has so far been inadequate.

Specifically, the union criticizes eight zero months without any compensation development at the beginning.

According to Verdi, there are also low increase increments, the 36-month term and completely unanswered demands.

Last week (January 31st) Verdi broke off collective bargaining with Lufthansa.

“We are prepared to take the path of the ultima ratio,” Verdi had already announced there.
