October 7 attack: the French underestimate the number of French Hamas victims

2024-02-07T08:44:34.726Z

Highlights: October 7 attack: the French underestimate the number of French Hamas victims. 18-24 year olds and LFI supporters are among the least well informed respondents about the attack by the Islamist movement. Three French or Franco-Israeli people are still missing and presumed hostages. More than four out of ten French people believe that the government does not give enough importance to the current situation of Hamas hostages. The survey reveals that, among four attacks that occurred abroad and affected French people, October 7 “is the second that most marked memories”

18-24 year olds and LFI supporters are among the least well informed respondents about the attack by the Islamist movement, according to the results of an interactive Harris study carried out for Crif, revealed by France Inter.

The figure speaks for itself: almost one in two French people think that the bloody Hamas attack in Israel on October 7 caused fewer than ten French or Franco-Israeli victims.

In reality, 42 of them lost their lives.

This is the main lesson of an interactive Harris poll* carried out at the request of the Representative Council of Jewish Institutions of France (Crif), the results of which were published this Wednesday by France Inter, while a national tribute chaired by Emmanuel Macron was returned this afternoon to the French victims of the terrorist group.

The French lack of precise knowledge about this attack, in which 1,160 people were killed according to an AFP count based on official Israeli data, is obvious.

Although a large majority of respondents (86%) know that compatriots have been killed by the Islamist movement, few know the real extent of its consequences.

Young people and LFI supporters among the least well informed

18-24 year olds are one of the least well informed groups of the population about the attack.

Just like the sympathizers of La France insoumise, adds the public service radio: 25% of them do not know that there were French victims during the Hamas attack.

In contrast, only 3% of Socialist Party supporters and 7% of those aged 65 and over think that there were no French people among the victims.

This does not mean that October 7, 2023 did not leave its mark on the French.

The survey reveals that, among four attacks that occurred abroad and affected French people, October 7

“is the second that most marked memories, clearly ahead of that of Brussels in 2016 or that of London in 2005 »

.

The attack of September 11, 2001, in the United States, in which four French people disappeared,

“remains by far in first position”

.

Latest lesson: more than four out of ten French people believe that the government does not give enough importance to the current situation of Hamas hostages.

Three French or Franco-Israeli people are still missing and presumed hostages.
