In a statement, the association “Side by Side e.

V.” the citizens’ initiative

Markt Schwaben -

The discussions about the planned refugee accommodation at Am Ziegelstadel never end.

After the citizens' initiative “Burgerfeld becomes Bürgerfeld” was founded on December 21st, 2023 and a citizens' initiative was launched from January 12th to 22nd, they were able to hand over 1,777 signatures to Mayor Michael Stolze on January 24th.

A few days earlier, at the local council meeting, the joint motion of the CSU/FDP and Free Voters factions with the wording “The market town council rejects the facility at this location (Am Ziegelstadel, Markt Schwaben)” was approved by a majority.

Now Side by Side eV - Accompaniment for Refugees - responds in a statement to the texts of the flyers, homepage and collection of signatures from the citizens' initiative.

The association writes in a press release: “We view with great disapproval the false information and the fomenting of fears and scaremongering, as expressed by the citizens' initiative both on their homepage and when collecting signatures.”

Under the heading “False information and prejudices” the following is listed: “The district office spoke of up to 120 refugees.

The citizens' initiative writes of "at least 120 asylum seekers in a mass accommodation" and that "in 7 years due to fluctuation vs. significantly more than 120 asylum seekers will come to the residential area.

Despite our advice that the claim that up to 1,200 asylum seekers are moving to the residential area was false and misleading, this was advertised when collecting the signatures.

The calculation: 120 people x 8 months (duration of the asylum procedure) x 7 years (duration of the rental agreement) = up to 1,200 residents is incorrect in terms of content.”

Further passage in the message: “Although the district office itself only finds out shortly before the arrival of the refugees who the group of people is concerned, the citizens’ initiative says that “predominantly male asylum seekers are accommodated”.

Male asylum seekers are defamed and prejudiced by the targeted framing of the citizens' initiative.

If the citizens' initiative points out that integration can only be successful together with the citizens, they declare this demand to be a waste with their prejudicial statements."

The statement also addresses the problem surrounding the train station.

The opinion from side by side: “The claim that the “hot spot” at the Schwabener Bahnhof market could worsen due to the arrival of refugees also unnecessarily stirs up fears and is a propaganda tool.

It is in no way plausibly explained to what extent the planned accommodation would have an impact on the situation around the Schwabener Bahnhof market.

Rather, it is an arousing hypothesis for which there appears to be no valid evidence.” In addition, the local council resolution of January 18, 2024 is described as the “wrong signal” and “politically irresponsible due to its divisive character”.

Under the text passage “Our position” it says, among other things: “We clearly support the location!

We consider accommodation in a container village or a gymnasium, as has happened in the past, to be inhumane and therefore vehemently reject this.

We can partly understand the alleged lack of concept in the planned accommodation and advocate constructive cooperation between all those involved.”

The communication ends with the conclusion: “Finally, it should be noted that accommodation with a lower occupancy rate represents a decisive factor when it comes to decent accommodation;

but not the only one.

We expressly support accommodation at Am Ziegelstadel due to its central location and demand an accommodation concept that takes the needs of refugees into account.”
