The National Police arrested two women this Tuesday in Navarra accused of spreading messages of support for ETA through social networks, as confirmed by police and judicial sources.

The arrested women appeared this Wednesday before Joaquín Gadea, investigating judge of the National Court, who released them with precautionary measures - periodic appearances in court and the obligation to communicate their place of residence - after refusing to testify.

Both are charged with a crime of glorifying terrorism and humiliating the victims for the dissemination of at least a dozen messages on the social network X (formerly Twitter), according to the complaint that gave rise to the investigations.

One of the messages included in the UPN complaint that led to the arrests this Tuesday.

The investigation that led to the arrest of both began after a complaint was filed with the Police by Unión del Pueblo Navarro (UPN) on January 17 for the dissemination through an account on X with the pseudonym

Istebeni

- which has nearly 700 followers—of what he considered “humiliating messages for the victims of the terrorist group ETA.”

The political party highlighted in it that, in one of them, reference was made to the political party itself.

Along with the complaint, to which EL PAÍS has had access, UPN provided an annex with screenshots of a dozen messages from Istebeni in recent months - some in response to posts by other people, including politicians such as Pablo Echenique. , from Podemos, or the media― in which statements are made such as “eta [in lower case in the text] is my favorite armed group”, “the majority of the dead from ETA were police, military and politicians, and we already know why (it should have been called 'work accident')” or “few ETA was killed”.

UPN highlighted that all of these comments, presumably humiliating for the victims, are “accessible to all users of the social network who want to access them, since their personal account is open to the general public.”

And it highlighted that one of the comments, published on January 15 shortly before 11:00 p.m., had been seen in just two days "by 102,000 users of the social network X."

In this message, Istebeni stated: “No, no matter how much you repeat that ETA killed for thinking differently, it doesn't work.

ETA, except for some screw-up, was going after the structures of the state [sic, in lower case] and, even if it screws you up, history is what it is.”

One of the messages included in the UPN complaint that led to the arrests this Tuesday.

The police investigation that began allowed the identification of one of the alleged users of these profiles as a 63-year-old woman residing in Iturmendi, a town of less than 400 inhabitants located 45 kilometers from Pamplona.

Her arrest occurred at her home on Tuesday morning, as detailed on social networks by

emerged after the dissolution of ETA.

According to Navarrese political sources, the arrested person is the widow of Julen GO, a former member of ETA who died in 2016.
