A man was rescued by a helicopter in Los Angeles as torrential rains hit California.

The man jumped into a city canal to catch his dog, which had fallen into the water.

Both the animal and its owner were able to be rescued.

Since Sunday, California has been facing heavy rainfall that has caused dangerous flooding and landslides, killing at least three people.

Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara are among 58 counties that have been placed under a state of emergency.

Authorities also issued evacuation orders for the Hollywood Hills and Santa Monica.

Half a million homes were left without electricity.

“The storm is expected to end on Thursday or Friday,” the weather service announced.
