For the third time this year, the Ukrainian capital Kiev has been the target of Russian air strikes.

A high-rise building is hit.

Mayor Klitschko reports deaths and injuries.

Kiev - Massive Russian air strikes on Ukraine have killed at least five people and injured dozens more.

So far there have been four deaths in Kiev, said Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

More than 30 people were injured.

One person also died and six others were injured in the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv.

“The rescue workers are doing everything they can to clear the rubble.

We do not rule out the possibility that there are still people under the rubble,” said Klitschko, who saw for himself the destruction in a high-rise building hit by rocket debris in Kiev.

An injured pregnant woman had previously been rescued there.

“Almost all the windows in this house were broken,” Klitschko said.

There were also temporary power outages in the capital Kiev after two high-voltage lines were damaged by falling rocket debris.

Zelensky announces retaliation

According to authorities, it was the third air raid against the capital since the beginning of the year.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyj condemned the new Russian attack as a terrorist attack and vowed retaliation.

According to Zelensky, a total of six regions of Ukraine were affected by the renewed massive bombardment.

According to authorities, two people were injured in the Kharkiv region.

Klitschko called on people to seek shelter in bunkers.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who was just visiting Kiev, said he also had to flee to safety that morning because of the air alert.

“This is the everyday reality for the brave Ukrainian people since Russia began its illegal aggression,” he wrote on the platform X (formerly Twitter.) He waited in an underground car park.

In the city of Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, authorities reported destruction of buildings and injuries as a result of Russian missile attacks.

Mayor Olexander Sjenkewytsch announced in his blog on the Telegram news service that an injured person had died in hospital.

Water pipes and the gas network were also damaged by the enemy attacks, said Sjenkewytsch, who published pictures of the destruction.

An explosion was reported in Drohobych in the Lviv region.

The town, around 50 kilometers from the Polish border, is known for its oil refinery.

There had already been several impacts there.

Cruise missiles and drones shot down

According to anti-aircraft defense, around 20 Russian cruise missiles were shot down in Kiev and the surrounding area alone in the morning.

They were therefore fired by Russian Tupolev strategic bombers Tu-95MS.

Drones were also shot down again, as the air force announced.

The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Valeriy Zalushnyy, said that a total of 44 out of 64 air targets had been destroyed, including drones and cruise missiles.

Russia once again deployed its feared Iskander surface-to-surface ballistic missile.

According to Ukrainian statistics, several rockets and drones hit unspecified locations.

The military generally does not provide information about hits on military targets.

The Russian Defense Ministry said in Moscow that the high-precision strikes were aimed at military targets at defense factories in Ukraine.

“The aim of the attack was achieved.

All objects were destroyed,” the ministry said in a statement.

There was no evidence of this.

The targets were bombed from the air and sea, as well as from drones.

Among other things, the production of Ukrainian ship drones and missile systems was destroyed.

In its war of aggression that has been going on for almost two years, Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine with drone and missile attacks.

Ukraine is defending itself against these attacks with Western military help.

Germany has particularly contributed to strengthening the country's air defense system.

Ukraine has called for significantly more Western help for air defense in order to better protect its cities.
