It was not specified what type of cancer the monarch was diagnosed with, nor what stage it was in, but the news comes less than a year after his coronation. It is striking that Princess Anne, the second and only daughter of Elizabeth II, is number 17 to the throne.

The crown does not pass to the monarchs' partners, so Queen Camilla is not in the line of succession.

This is the order of succession to the British throne:

  • Prince William, eldest son of Charles and the late Princess Diana.

The Prince of Wales is married to Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales.

  • Prince George, William and Kate's eldest son, born in July 2013.

  • Princess Charlotte, daughter of William and Kate, born in May 2015.

  • Prince Louis, William and Kate's youngest child, born in April 2018.

  • Prince Harry, the youngest son of Charles and Diana.

He has renounced royal duties but remains in the line of succession.

  • Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, son of Harry and Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex.

He was born in May 2019.

  • Lilibet Mountbatten-Windsor, daughter of Harry and Meghan, born in June 2021.

  • Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

  • Princess Beatrice, the eldest daughter of Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.

  • Sienna Mapelli Mozzi, daughter of Beatriz and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, born in September 2021.

  • Princess Eugenie, the youngest daughter of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

  • August Brooksbank, son of Eugenia and James Brooksbank, born in February 2021.

  • Ernest Brooksbank, youngest son of Eugenia and James Brooksbank, born in May 2023.

  • Prince Edward, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Philip.

  • James, Viscount Severn, son of Edward and his wife, Sophia, Duchess of Edinburgh.

  • Lady

Luisa Mountbatten-Windsor, daughter of Edward and Sofia.

  • Princess Anne, the second and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

She is older than her brothers Andrew and Edward, but she is lower in succession to the throne due to rules that for centuries favored sons over daughters.

The rules were changed in 2015, too late for Luisa Mountbatten-Windsor, who remains behind her younger brother James.

  • Peter Phillips, son of Anne and her ex-husband Mark Phillips.

  • Savannah Phillips, the eldest daughter of Peter Phillips and his ex-wife, Autumn Kelly.

  • Isla Phillips, youngest daughter of Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly.

  • Zara Tindall, daughter of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips.

  • Mia Tindall, eldest daughter of Zara and her husband Mike Tindall.

  • Lena Tindall, youngest daughter of Zara and Mike Tindall.

  • Lucas Tindall, son of Zara and Mike Tindall.

  • The diagnosis of King Charles III

On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced in a statement that King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer, saying it was "caught early."

“During the king's recent hospital procedure for a benign enlarged prostate, another matter of concern was noted,” according to the emailed document.

“Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”

Buckingham Palace did not specify what type of cancer the monarch suffers from, or what stage it is in.

On the other hand, they detailed that the monarch did not have prostate cancer.

The news comes a week after the king and Princess Kate underwent separate medical procedures at a private clinic in London.

The king underwent a “corrective procedure” of prostate enlargement, while Kate underwent unspecified abdominal surgery on January 17.
