Too many mouths to feed.
In Bordeaux, an animal protection and defense association is sounding the alarm about an influx of abandoned rodents, which volunteers are struggling to care for.
After
“two requests for massive care
of guinea pigs
”
, the Vénus association says it is faced with
“an endless challenge”
and calls for help.
“The first tragedy took place in the streets of Bègles, where a multitude of guinea pigs were cruelly abandoned, both males and females
,” explains Laurent Blanchard-Talou, vice-president of the association.
“This senseless decision had disastrous consequences”
because
“all the females were pregnant”
, which
“rapidly doubled”
the number of guinea pigs now in the care of this organization.

While the association's volunteers had
"barely recovered from this first shock"
,
"a new wave of distress"
knocked at their door, deplores the distraught vice-president of Vénus.
“A few weeks later, a couple contacted us to take care of nearly twenty guinea pigs, which they were considering abandoning in the wild.”
“
Once again, males and females were intermingled, triggering a new series of births.
But, this time, our new residents were struck by ringworm, a debilitating disease requiring intensive and expensive treatments
,” adds Laurent Blanchard-Talou.
For the moment, few serious adoption requests have reached Venus.
Because of these two unforeseen arrivals, the vice-president explains that the Bordeaux association
"is facing an arduous financial battle"
, spending
"nearly 1000 euros per month to provide for the needs of these fifty guinea pigs, including costs for food, litter and ringworm treatments
.
He calls for
“help from the community and animal lovers”
, whether it is financial, material or moral support.
