The city council's rejection of a building application from the Turkish Islamic Community for a minaret at the mosque in Memmingen is being implemented.
Memmingen - With 20 votes to 20, the Memmingen city council decided in the plenary session on January 29, 2024 against the Turkish Islamic Community's building application for a minaret on the existing mosque.
Equal votes are considered rejection.
After intensive discussions with the city council factions and other parties involved, Mayor Jan Rothenbacher supports the city council's decision.
The decision will be implemented.
After another review: the city council's negative decision regarding a minaret on mosque grounds in Memmingen will be implemented
In the past few days, the negative decision was examined again in detail.
In principle, the building department of the city of Memmingen assessed the application as eligible for approval.
However, the requested height of the minaret of 24 meters was viewed critically.
The development plans for adjacent areas provide for building heights of a maximum of 16 meters.
“The criterion of fitting into the surroundings, which is necessary for approval, can be assessed very differently on this point,” explains Mayor Jan Rothenbacher.
“We have a negative decision in both the building committee and the city council plenary.
“I respect the decision-making process of the committees,” emphasizes the mayor.
The building application is now rejected by the city administration.
