Many beaches in Italy have introduced visitor caps and entry fees in recent years.

Another one is now apparently being added in Liguria.

Along with Spain and Greece, Italy is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Germans.

But anyone who wants to relax on the beach is increasingly faced with access fees or visitor limits - sometimes even both.

Now there is another stretch of coast, the Baia del Silenzio in the Ligurian municipality of Sestri Levante.

According to the Italian news agency

Ansa,

the mayor Francesco Solinas is said to have thrown up an entry fee to the beach operators in the municipality.

The Baia del Silenzia (Bay of Silence) is named after the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen, who enjoyed staying there.

Entry to the Baia del Silenzio will cost tourists five euros in the summer of 2024, but it will be free for locals.

Children under the age of twelve should also be exempt.

It is not yet clear who will ultimately collect the fee, but the visitor limit - as in previous years - should remain limited to 400 guests.

“Revenue from entrance fees will be used to increase services, including the costs of security, lifeguards and beach cleaning,” says Solinas, according to local newspaper

La Voce di Genova

.

Where an extra fee is charged for access to the beach when on holiday in Italy

The municipality of Sestri Levante is following the example of many other Italian municipalities, especially on the island of Sardinia.

In Baunei last summer, the number of visitors to Cala dei Gabbiani and Cala Biriala was limited to 300 people a day.

At Cala Goloritzè there are only 250 guests - and on top of that, they charged six euros for entry.

There has been an entry fee at the Spaggia della Pelosa in northern Sardinia for a long time.

Since 2021, a maximum of 1,500 bathers per day have been allowed, each of whom must pay a fee of 3.50 euros over the age of twelve.

At the Spiaggi di Punta Molentis in the municipality of Villasimius, visitors pay one euro per person, and in the summer season no more than 600 sun seekers are allowed on the beach, as

Ansa

reported last year.

At the holiday resort of San Teodoro there is an upper limit of 1,447 guests at Cala Brandinchi, and at Lu Impostu beach it is 3,352 guests.

Visitors pay two euros for entry to both beaches.

On the Isla dei Conigli, which is located off the southwest coast of the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, beach visitors also have to take out their wallet - two euros are due.

A maximum of 350 guests are allowed to stay here in the morning and afternoon.
