Volodymyr Zelensky has apparently fired the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army.

There had previously been speculation about a power struggle.

Kiev - Of all people, the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Valeriy Zalushnyj, recently seemed to become a kind of opposition for Volodymyr Zelenskyj.

Now Saluschnyj has to vacate his post.

Zelensky announced this on Thursday evening (February 8th) in rather obscure words in a posting on X (formerly Twitter).

He seemed to be suggesting a consensual decision.

But questions remain open.

Zelenskyj dismisses Ukraine's top commander Zalushnyj – “Time for renewal”

“I met with General Valeriy Saluzhny.

I thanked him for two years of defense of Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

Now the time has come for a “renewal”.

Together with the previous commander in chief, he also discussed options for a “renewed leadership” of the Ukrainian army.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that he had also offered Zalushnyy “to remain part of the team.”

However, he did not mention an answer or consent from the (former) army chief.

It is now clear who will be the successor at the head of the Ukrainian army: Colonel General Olexander Syrskyj has been appointed as his successor, Zelenskyj explained in a video message.
