On Wednesday afternoon (February 7, 2024) an accident occurred on the A 96 (heading towards Munich) near the Erkheim exit.

A car had collided with a tractor-trailer there.

The driver was taken to Memmingen Hospital with serious injuries.

Criminal investigations were initiated against the person who caused the accident for negligent bodily harm.

Erkheim/A 96 - A 61-year-old driver of an Austrian tractor-trailer was traveling on the A 96 towards Munich around 1:30 p.m.

He noticed too late that a truck in front of him was slowing down because the driver wanted to leave the motorway at the Erkheim junction.

In order to avoid being rear-ended, the 61-year-old swerved into the left lane with his tractor-trailer and overlooked a car that was quickly approaching from behind. Its 31-year-old driver was no longer able to avoid it and crashed into the rear of the semi-trailer.

As the car continued, it first hit the concrete sliding wall and then the right-hand guard rail, where it finally came to a stop.

The driver of the car was taken to Memmingen Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was uninjured.

The completely damaged car was recovered by a towing service.

Overall, property damage amounted to around 64,000 euros.

The fire brigades from Erkheim and Schlegelsberg took care of securing the accident site and closed the right lane and the exit at the Erkheim junction for around one and a half hours.

The Mindelheim motorway maintenance department was also on site and assessed the damage to the guardrail.

Officials initiated a criminal investigation into the 61-year-old who caused the accident for negligent bodily harm.
