In the summer, the city will start a test run for free minibuses and e-rickshaws.

They are primarily intended to help older people get around the old town easily.

Munich - Munich's old town is full of shops, restaurants and doctors' offices.

In fact, in no other district is the density of medical professionals as high as around Marienplatz.

However, accessibility is difficult, especially for people who are less able to walk, for example the sick and the elderly.

The city now wants to help.

As our editorial team has learned, a pilot test with electric minibuses and e-rickshaws is scheduled to start in the summer months (June to August).

Now the mini mobiles are coming for the old town!

Mini mobiles for the old town in Munich: Similar concepts already exist in the Slovenian capital

A comparable concept exists with the “Kavalier” in Ljubljana (Slovenia), where the mini-buses even gondolas through the pedestrian zone.

Due to the low speed (maximum 25 km/h), passers-by can stop and get in the vehicles while they are driving.

The “Cavalier” is available in an open and closed version and can accommodate up to five passengers.

It is not yet clear what the vehicles will look like in Munich.

The buses are expected to commute around the pedestrian zones every ten minutes, and the e-rickshaws will even take seniors or patients from the bus stop directly to shopping or to the practice as needed.

The highlight: The offer is initially aimed at anyone interested and will be free in the pilot phase!

However, the city council still has to approve it at the end of February.

Mini-mobile for the old town in Munich: “We want to improve the accessibility of the pedestrian zone”

When asked, Mayor Dominik Krause (Greens) said: “With this project we want to improve the accessibility of the pedestrian zone.

The minibuses also enable people who are no longer able to walk so well to visit the old town.” The whole thing is a great example of how economic concerns and mobility concerns can be combined.

“Older people in particular cannot walk long distances in the pedestrian zone.

There has to be an offer specifically for this group of people.”
