Jimmy Kimmel doubts Gelsenkirchen's existence.
The city reacts promptly and invites the US moderator to convince himself otherwise.
Gelsenkirchen/Hollywood – It was only a few days ago that the well-known US presenter Jimmy Kimmel questioned the existence of Gelsenkirchen on his show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Now the city has reacted and invited the host of the late night show.
“It’s worth visiting Gelsenkirchen,” said mayor Karin Welge (SPD) in an interview with the
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
.
Jimmy Kimmel “unsure whether Gelsenkirchen really exists”
Jimmy Kimmel spoke on his show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” last week about the fact that former US President Donald Trump claims to be better known than singer Taylor Swift.
Kimmel contradicted this and asked, among other things, how well known Trump was in Tokyo, Singapore or Gelsenkirchen (NRW).
The extremely successful singer is playing at least three concerts in the city in the Ruhr area this year.
Trump has to measure himself up against that first.
“I’m not even sure if Gelsenkirchen really exists,” Kimmel said in a somewhat mocking joke.
The 56-year-old was probably not aware of what he would do in the Ruhr area and in Germany.
Many newspapers and online media reported on Kimmel's mockery of the city in the Ruhr area.

Some people thought Gelsenkirchen was the second Bielefeld.
The city in East Westphalia is said to not actually exist.
Now even Karin Welge, mayor of Gelsenkirchen, has
commented in detail on the matter in an interview with the
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .
Accordingly, she is happy about “any PR for Gelsenkirchen”.
The mayor of Gelsenkirchen invites Kimmel to visit the city
Nobody should get the idea that Gelsenkirchen wants to compete with Bielefeld in any way.
The weekend after the broadcast, Gelsenkirchen's city marketing department sent Kimmel an invitation "so that he could personally see for himself that 'Gelsenkirchen Germany' really exists," says Welge.

Welge also invites the moderator to a personal meeting on the sidelines of a Taylor Swift concert in the Veltins Arena.
The singer will give two additional concerts in Gelsenkirchen in addition to the one actually planned.
The demand for tickets was so high that just a few days after the dates were announced, many hotels and accommodations in the Ruhr area were fully booked.
So that Kimmel could get an impression of the city beforehand, he was sent a link to a tourist website about Gelsenkirchen.
“We’re really looking forward to Kimmel’s response,” says Welge.
In addition to Taylor Swift's concert, games from the European Football Championship will also take place in Gelsenkirchen in 2024.
As Welge says, it seems to be a “pretty good year” for Gelsenkirchen.
