What is a native plant?
A native plant is a plant that grows naturally in a place, without having been planted there by humans.
Of the 5,000 species of native plants recorded in France, more than 700 are considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Why plant native plants in the garden?
Native plants have a very important function in the ecosystem and biodiversity of the garden at the local level.
Along with pollinating insects, they contribute to the healthy development of wildlife.
They are resistant and have the capacity to adapt to various diseases, bacteria, fungi and acclimatize to possible climate and weather changes, such as rainfall.
As they have established themselves, they are self-regulating and therefore do not require any special maintenance, whether pruning or watering.
They also tend to promote, through their presence, the development of other plants likely to coexist with them.
However, if you wish to collect one in a field or near a water point, it is recommended to find out if it is not a protected species and it is therefore preferable to leave it where it grew.
How to find native plants depending on the region?
There are several possibilities to obtain them, such as during certain events attended by people who sell or barter seeds.
The Center Val de Loire region offers an interactive map according to location to choose the native plant best suited to your garden.
The “Local Plant” site, property of the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) resulting from a call for projects from the Ministry in charge of ecology launched in 2011 as part of the National Biodiversity Strategy and entitled “ Conservation and sustainable use of native plant species to develop local sectors, lists the list of approved producers to contact depending on the region.
